History and Results for the Rocky Mountain 1000 Day (and affiliated events)

Updated 16 January 2005

Lots of people ask how many days of the 1000 Day there have actually been so far, and if it's really true we're going to quit when we hit 1000. To the last: well, if we hit 1000, then we're very definitely going to quit!. As to the former, it's very complicated, and if you can get it right you probably deserve an endowed chair teaching math somewhere. New math won't get you there (four 1000 Days, therefore 4 x 1000 = 4000 which is wrong.) Calculus won't do it either, since this is one doggy curve that has no area underneath it. And not even Silicon Valley math works (if I buy it, someone else will be willing to buy it an hour later, for twice the price I bought it at.) The basic difficulty resides in not understanding that forerunner and certain other esoteric events count (where esoteric has not been fully defined) and that night races don't count. Sure, it seems like night races would count, but they don't. Except for when we say they do. Just trust us on that.

We have recently (Spring of 2004) had some highly regarded mathematicians review our calculations, and, plus or minus a day or two, the revised Magic Number = 991 days.

Notes:

1) In 2000 we held the US Night and Long Course Championships as part of the 1000 Day and for scheduling reasons there was therefore no Stampede or Rocky Mountain Goat.

2) In 2001 The Stampede was held as part of the 4 day May Daze event.
