Frontier Field: Brief Background

Frontier Field was completed with much anticipation in July of 1996. The long awaited replacement to the 67 year old Silver Stadium was finally completed and opened July 11th, 1996 to a sold out crowd to see a Beach Boys concert along with a fireworks show. Then the first ever sporting event took place the next evening in front of an overflow crowd of 14,800 fans to see the Rhinos defeat Montreal. The Rhinos went on to average extremely well, with over 12,000 fans coming on an average night. The first year was a huge success, with many events drawing well, but a new leaf will be turned April 11th, when the Wings open in Frontier Field! A sold out crowd (which has been since the first day they went on sale) will be on hand!

Frontier Field has an impressive array of features that are almost second to none in most minor league stadiums. This $33 million stadium includes the following features:

  • 36 Luxury Boxes, the most in the International League.

  • Frontier Field has two scoreboards. The main scoreboard can show replays and is the largest scoreboard and one of the only video scoreboards in all of minor league baseball.

  • In the concession stands there are montiors, so fans can watch the action while getting concessions.

  • Frontier Field has 10,443 seats, which are identical to those at Camden Yards. The seats have cup holders. Also Frontier Field has 2,000 fold up bleacher seats that are available to the soccer team, and can be used for other events as well. A good amount of standing room seating is also available.

  • Frontier Field also has an area in left field where the fans can watch from behind the wall, and in that area tables are set up for fan use.

  • In left and right field Frontier Field has a grass area for fans to sit in and watch the game.

  • There is a deck behind left field for organized events.

  • There are two raised bullpens in left and right field.

These are just some of the impressive features that our new stadium displays. The impressive look of the stadium, good location (next to the High Falls Distract, which is a quickly growing entertainment distract, so the stadium will be a helpful addition there, and during the games you will be able to see the fireworks going off at the laser light shows in High Falls!) and wealth of parking (Kodak Lots, High Falls Garage, Sister Cities Garage among several ground lots make this aspect very nice, there were no problems with parking with 15,000 people on hand at some of the Rhinos games.) add to what will be a very positive stadium situation! The Wings enjoyed an extremely successful year one, drawing over 550,000 at Frontier and it lived up to the high expectations set forth. Here is looking forward to many more successful seasons at one of the finest stadiums in minor league baseball!
