Mariner Ice Hockey of Toms River
1996-1997 Season
The Mariners ice hockey team play for Toms River North HS and they
compete in the National " B " conference of the New Jersey Interscholastic
Athletic Association which is the premiere league for high school sports in New
Jersey. Public as well as private schools compete in this league.The Mariners
enjoyed a successful season in 96-97 finishing with a record of
17-6-2.Highlights of the season included winning the Van Cott Cup and
finishing with an overall ranking of 7th in the state after beginning the season
unranked.The Mariners made it to the quarter finals of the State playoffs only
to be eliminated by Bayonne in a close match of 4-2. Cross town rivals of Brick Memorial gave the Mariners the usual fits by
defeating them twice with scores of 2-1 during the regular season however the Mariners were able
to defeat Brick Memorial in the Conference Cup tournament to capture the Van Cott Cup for the
first time since their inception. The Mariners outscored their opponents 126-67 and recorded 4
shutouts while never being shut out themselves. Several graduating seniors
received All-State and All-Star recognition and will continue their hockey play
at various colleges/ post graduate schools such as Towson University, University
of Delaware and Lawrenceville Academy. The team was coached by Adam
Shubsda who was former assistant coach under Robert Cielo who was killed in
a surfing accident before the beginning of the 96-97 season. The team
overcame several obstacles early on in the season and dedicated the 96-97
season to the memory of Coach Cielo. Adam Shubsda will be head coach for
the 97-98 season and will have a young team to work with as 11 seniors
graduated in 97.
