FOCUS ON COUNTY'S NEW SIGNINGS

{ Brian Irvine } { Michael Geraghty } { Gary Hamilton } { John Fraser } { Gary Nicol }
{ Kevin Finlayson } { George Shaw }

This article appeared in The Ross-shire Journal in a supplement entitled Go Ross County - Season 1999-2000: A Preview.

BRIAN IRVINE

Position: Defender
Age: 34
Born: Belshill; May 24, 1965
Height: 6' 3"
Weight: 13st 12lbs
Former Clubs: Falkirk, Aberdeen and Dundee
Achievements: Nine Scotland caps; 1989-90 Scottish Cup Winners' Medal (with Aberdeen); 306 appearances for Aberdeen.
Signed: Free transfer; three year full time contract.
Neale Cooper says: "Brian Irvine's arrival is exciting for the whole club. He is an influential defender, big, strong and commanding. His influence will be felt right through the team and he has already shown in pre-season games and against Forfar in the cup, the danger he poses from set pieces. He is capable of scoring 10 - 15 goals this season and this adds a whole ne dimension to our play."

MICHAEL GERAGHTY

Position: Striker.
Age: 28
Born: Glasgow, October 30 1970.
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 11st 2lbs
Former Clubs: Kilmarnock, Stranraer, East Stirlingshire and Hamilton.
Achievements: East Stirlingshire's top scorer in Season 1994-95 with 16 goals.
Signed: Free transfer; two year full time contract.
Neale Cooper says: "He scored a fantastic goal in our pre-season match at Elgin and was unfortunate not to score in the League Cup opener with Forfar when he hit the bar. He is one of the players who may have to wait to grasp his first-team chance but he is not far away from a starting berth. He has also been a proven player in the past and he has the experience and nose for a goal to make a big impression here."

GARY HAMILTON

Position: Goalkeeper.
Age: 18
Born: Stirling; January 28, 1981.
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 11st 7lbs
Former Club: St Mirren
Achievements: Caps for Scotland Under-17.
Signed: Free transfer, two year full time contract.
Neale Cooper says: "Gary is a goalkeeper with great ability. He will learn his trade from Nicky Walker and is available to step into the first team if Nicky is injured. The great thing is that Gary will not have to sit on the sidelines - he will play for our Under-18 side, stay tuned and ready for action, and gain his footing there."

JOHN FRASER

Position: Midfield.
Age: 21
Born: Dunfermline; January 17, 1978.
Height: 5' 10"
Weight: 11st 6lbs
Former Club: Dunfermline.
Achievements: Two startling appearances in the Premier League last season but sat on the bench 29 times and on many of these occasions gained valuable experience.
Signed: Free transfer, two year full time contract.
Neale Cooper says: "If John can quickly shake off his back injury, he can challenge for a first team place. He has all the ability - he is a good user of the ball, physically strong and capable of making intelligent runs forward or filling that defensive 'sitting' role."

GARY NICOL

Position: Striker.
Age: 18
Born: Inverness; September 7, 1980.
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 10st 11lbs
Former Club: Celtic
Achievements: Won Inverness Cup medal with ICT during a loan spell before favouring a move to Ross County.
Signed:
Neale Cooper says: "It is hard to believe that Gary is only 18. He has shown that he is willing to learn and is a player with agreat first touch and the ability to do well at this club. The biggest challenge for Gary is to get over the disappointment of leaving Celtic and realise the possibilitieswhich still beckon. He has the chance here to prove people wrong."

KEVIN FINLAYSON

Position: Midfield/wing.
Age: 19
Born: Glasgow; December 7, 1979.
Height: 5' 9"
Weight: 10st 1lb
Former Club: Queen's Park
Achievements: Watched by a host of top clubs last season, including Celtic. Had the cheek to score the winner at Victoria Park last April.
Signed: Free transfer, two year full time contract.
Neale Cooper says: "Kevin loves his football - and shows it on the park. He has come straight from working in a factory to full time football and has to make that adjustment, but has shown his flair in his first few outings for us. He is a player with lots of skill who will excite the fans. He has a big future if he can settle here."

GEORGE SHAW

Position: Striker.
Age: 30
Born: Glasgow; February 10, 1969.
Height: 5' 7"
Weight: 10st 9lbs
Former Clubs: St Mirren, Partick Thistle, Dundee and Dunfermline.
Achievements: Over 50 goals in Premier League football.
Signed: Free transfer; two year full time contract.
Neale Cooper says: "If anything, what we have lacked in recent seasons is a striker with real experience. A lot of teams we play will have exactly that and George's signing is, therefore, very important. He leads the line well and has shown his sharpness in pre-season games. He never shrugs off the responsibility and is a great motivator. I've already seen him helping out the boys in training by suggesting runs and working them through moves. Next to Brian Irvine, our most important signing."
