COUNTY SHOCK CELTIC
Celtic U-18 2; ROSS COUNTY U-18 3

Ross County's youngsters made the best possible start to their SPL U-18 League campaign when they shocked Celtic by returning to Dingwall with all three points.

Last season Celtic had won both league meetings between the clubs convincingly, but on this occasion County worked hard to make sure that they did not lose an early goal.

Matters were fairly even in the first twenty minutes, but mid-way through the first half, Connor GETHINS gave County the lead with a well struck left foot shot.

Celtic hit back ten minutes later and drew level. Immediately, County responded and a good build up led to GETHINS going through to beat the 'keeper and restore County's advantage.

Celtic applied some pressure before half time but County went into the interval 2-1 ahead.

In the second half, the Glasgow side put in a determined effort but County looked dangerous on the break. On one such occasion, the celtic defence got themselves in a right tangle and a Celtic player, attempting to clear, put the ball into his own net.

This signalled a greater amount of Celtic pressure but the County defence dealt with it most effectively. Gethins' pace was posing some problems as County broke out of defence. County came close to extending their lead with efforts from Darren Jack that hit the bar and Craig Campbell whose shot was only inches wide.

However, Celtic's pressure paid off in the 75th minute when a cross from the left was turned into the County goal.

Celtic continued to press but the County team kept their discipline and remained a threat when they went forward.

Ross County U-18 XI: Shearer; Crilly, Guild, Lamb, Bolochoweckyj, Wilson (Nicholl), Campbell, Blackley, Gethins, Jack (Duncanson) and Young (Keldie).

CELTIC ARE TOO STRONG
ROSS COUNTY U-18 XI 0; Celtic U-18 XI 3

On Tuesday, an excellent Celtic side was just too good for Ross County in their Under-18 SPL match at Dingwall, and they went down 0-3.

County fielded their strongest team, but it seemed Celtic did likewise, and included Shaun Maloney amongst their many talented youngsters.

The visitors started impressively and moved the ball about very smartly. County battled to deny them space, but their opponents took control and within the first 20 minutes had unpicked the defence and were three goals up.

County’s only opportunity was a half-chance, which Connor Gethins was unable to convert.

The second half saw no further scoring. County fought hard to ensure there was no collapse, while Celtic remained comfortably in control. The home club did have a chance to take some late consolation from the game, when they were awarded a penalty, but Darren Jack saw his effort saved by the Celtic 'keeper.

This Celtic side was probably the most impressive Under-18 team County have met this season, and set a high standard, to which the local lads would love to aspire.

Ross County U-18: Shearer; Wilson, Webb, Bolochoweckyj, Gibson; Campbell (MacAskill), Cowie, Maxwell, Keldie (Dunnett); Gethins (Nicholl) and Jack. Unused Substitutes: Young and Rice.
