To the Death

The Defiant returns to Deep Space Nine after a mission in the Gamma Quadrant. Sisko and the crew discover that the station was attacked during their absence. A Jem’Hadar ship attacked the station, stole equipment and supplies and returned to the Gamma Quadrant. The Defiant leaves the station in pursuit of the Jem’Hadar ship. Once in the Gamma Quadrant, they find a disabled Dominion ship issuing a distress signal. They beam over the survivors - several Jem’Hadar soldiers and their Vorta supervisor.

The Vorta, Weyoun, tells Sisko that their ship was damaged while they were in pursuit of some Jem’Hadar renegades. These renegades have seized an ancient Iconian gateway that would allow them to travel instantaneously to any planet. He emphasizes the danger to both the Dominion and the Federation and asks for Sisko’s help in tracking down the renegades. Cooperation between the two powers would be beneficial to both. In true Vorta fashion ("just doing my job"), he also offers to make Sisko absolute ruler of the Federation. Sisko agrees to help destroy the gateway but, characteristically, refuses the offer of absolute rule.

The Federation crew and the Jem’Hadar begin training together. There is a great deal of tension between the two groups. The Federation crew do not understand the Jem’Hadar’s bloodthirsty attitude and the Jem’Hadar consider the Federation to be cowards. The Jem’Hadar also have conflicting attitudes towards Odo. To them, he is a god, but a god who abandoned his people. Weyoun, on the other hand, still reveres Odo. In spite of what Odo says to the contrary, Weyoun considers him a god who "he lives to serve". He speaks to Odo privately to tell him that the Founders still love Odo and want him to come home. When Odo tells Weyoun that he doesn’t love the Founders and doesn’t want to go home, Weyoun tells him bluntly that he’s lying. Weyoun is a master of lies, both spotting them and telling them. Weyoun offers to arrange it so Odo can go home if he wants. Odo refuses.

The Defiant arrives at the planet where the gateway is located, and the Federation and Dominion forces successfully destroy the gateway. Weyoun beams down to the planet after the battle. He is delighted when he is told that the gateway has been destroyed. He asks to inspect the wreckage. The Jem’Hadar first kills him for questioning their loyalty. Sisko and the crew return to the Alpha Quadrant, leaving the Jem’Hadar on the planet to hunt down the remaining renegades.
