JEFFREY COMBS PANEL, 2 SEPTEMBER 2000, NEXUS CONVENTION, BERLIN
by Emilia Petrov
Saturday morning at 10am Jeffrey Combs
woke up the audience of the Nexus Convention in Berlin with a dynamic and
interesting panel. He entered the stage slowly, spread his arms like Weyoun
and said in the typical smooth voice of the Vorta: Long live the Dominion.
After that - well - read it yourself!

Can everybody understand me pretty well? I was peeking around the corning watching this. The… So, I have to tell you, that I truly miss Deep Space Nine. Erm…on many levels, not just being busy with so many episodes back to back, but also the comradery, going to Paramount studios at like 4.30 in the morning! Going to Paramount studios, walking past, you know, Jack Lemmon and all sorts of people, but also the crew and the cast of that show were really an amazing group of people. It was like a big, big family that was working on something that everybody believed in and wanted to make it the best that it could possibly be. I’ve done other TV-shows and it’s all like “Yeah, well, whatever! We got it! Let’s go!”. Not really caring, but Star Trek cares and that made it…that’s soooo valueable! And rare! I really miss it, because of it! So, I’ve been in Berlin for a couple of days and I’ve been walking around and I couldn’t believe how much activity is going on in this town…in this city! And I have to say in 20 years time, Berlin is going to be a phenomenal place to live in and to visit! I’m just so amazed of the energy and vitality of this city..and I’m really honored to be here. It’s really great! Never been to Germany before and I rarely do ST conventions so…It’s really special for me to be here! And I’ve run into a couple of friends! Robert Krimmer, who I always knew as Wortham. We did theater together, quite a few years ago and we lost contact. So it’s great to see him and also Ted Raimi. We did a movie together last year! It hasn’t come out yet. It’s called The Attic Expeditions and all of our scenes were together, so when that movie comes out, you’ll have more of us than you want Q: [In German] Mein Englisch ist nicht so gut…. JC: You’re English isn’t very good…. JC: Q: Ich wollte sagen daß sie der Robert DeNiro des Horrorfilms sind… JC: OK, forget that…what did he say? Q:[In German] Tell us something about Faust and Beyond Re-Animator? JC: He wants to know about Faust and Beyond Re-Animator. Last year in November/December, right after I was working with Ted. I jumped onto a plane and flew up to Barcelona to begin filming a movie called Faust! Not to be confused with the classic novel. But it’s based on a comic book called Faust. Which is loosely based on the same theme. A man who makes a pact with the devil and becomes a very conflicted superhero. And I play a police detective who loves Elvis. And I’m investigating some very strange and bizarre murders that have been going on and come to realize there’s more to this than just a serial killer… Beyond Re-Animator! Not a single….I can’t tell you anything about that. There were….they went to Con and they sold it to Territories with my name attached, but I have no deal, which is sort of a strange way of doing things. So there’s no negotiations, there’s no talk, there’s no script! So that’s where that is. I have no news. If you know anything…let me know! Q: In Re-Animator you use an injection…a needle to inject yourself… JC: In my arm! How did I do it… Q: Is there a connection to a heroin junkie in this scene? JC: Oh, that scene was cut! In the…we shot that scene where I injected myself. But when the final film was made, they took that scene out! There is an R-rated version of Re-Animator that has that scene in it, but in the original and final version that scene is cut out. And I’m glad that is was cut out. ‘Cause I always felt that Herbert West didn’t need anything in order to do what he does. He needs nothing! He needs no re-animating fluid at all! He doesn’t need something to make him what he is. I don’t know if you’ve seen both versions of the movie? But that one WAS shot! But I’m glad is was cut out! Q: [Question on coincidence that JC played in so many HP Lovecraft movies] JC: Is it a coincidence? Well…no not really! Because Re-Animator was such a success in movie making, that is…makes the same thing happening again and again and again…that’s a good thing and a bad thing! It’s a good thing because they offered me more work, but it’s a bad thing because they offered me the same work over and over and over…and I like to explore different kinds of story ideas. So it was a little…it’s a double-edged sore! That’s why I was really pleased about Star Trek. It got me out of that whole horror-genre. Not that I have anything against it, but it’s like eating only one thing off a menu when you’re at a restaurant. I was really glad to be able to branch out and have people think of me as a different kind of actor than just a horror actor. So that’s it for your question!
