The term "Marine" has its roots in describing soldiers who fought from ships at sea during Earth's past.

In this time period it has become synonymous with those elite forces who are always ready to fight regardless of the Federation's overall readiness for war. Troops who are capable of operating far from their home bases, able to carry out operations on land, on sea, in air, and in space.
