The IAF is th world`s largest operator of the MiG-21s. It operates about 380 of these aircraft and they form the backbone of the IAF. These aircraft are being upgraded to the Mig-21_93. These aircrafts will then be able to carry weapons like the AA-10, AA-12 and are ideal for Escort and Air patrol duties.
The Mig-21 is to be replaced by the LCA (light combat aircraft). These aircraft will enter production in 2002.These state-of-the-art aircraft are delta winged and have fly-by-wire and look shoot down capability.
The LCA.
The IAF also operates about 125 Mig-23BN/UB interceptors and about 50 Mig-23MF. These fulfill the roles of Interceptor and Ground Attack.
The IAF has about 250+*- MiG-27ML Ground attack aircraft. These planes are the mainstay of the ground attack aircraft. The picture above shows new aircraft outside the HAL Factory awaiting deployment to the various squadrons.
The Mirage 2000H/TH are also in service with the IAF. These aircraft were used in the Kargil OPS.There are about 60 of these aircraft. These are aircraft are the most proven and reliable aircraft of the IAF and are shortlisted to carry nuclear weapons if the need arises. The IAF has about 98 Mig-29s in the Mig-29B/S/UB variants. These
Aircrafts have good ECM (electronic counter measures) Capablity as well as BVR (beyond visual range) Weapons like the AA-10, AA-12 ans super 530D AAM`s.
The new Su-30MK-1 has been newly inducted into the IAF. These are Multirole aircrafts.
There are about 25 of these aircrafts. some aircrafts are yet to arrive from Russia and the rest are to be made locally. These Aircraft are Battle ready and are also shortlisted to carry nuclear weapons into battle.
The IAF also has 150+ SEPECAT Jaguars ground Attack aircraft.The picture shows an aircraft armed with Magic Mantra AAMs and Laser Guided 1000 pound bombs.The Jaguar is an ideal fighter-bomber aircraft
LCA:-Test flown on 4th jan 2001. This fighter is set to enter service in 2005 and replace the MiG-21`s.
