The mere presence of Deep Freeze can give a false sense of security to a computer user. It is hard to work with any Deep Freeze configuration when you do not have ready access to the enabling and disabling password. Without the password, you can anticipate the following problems:
- Inadequate configurations on the operating system or on application software must be continuosly acknowledged, reset, or corrected after each startup by the user in order to continue working.
- Deep Freeze will protect and preserve viruses and spyware resident on the computer at the time you install or enable it.
- This means that viruses and spyware will continue to impact the computer, propogate to other computers via network connections, and infect magnetic media such as floppy disk, hard drive, zip disk, and portable storage.
- The only way to combat this problem is to disable Deep Freeze in order to remove viruses and spyware. See Optimizing with Deep Freeze.
- You can send a virus home to your own computer from an infected Deep Freeze system.
- Email
- File transfer
- Magnetic media
- Floppy disk
- Zip disk
- Portable storage
- Viruses target more locations than are protected under Deep Freeze.
- Some attack BIOS, CMOS, network connections, or volumes of a computer left unprotected by Deep Freeze.
- Deep Freeze interferes with online and local virus scans.
- It can impede thorough scans.
- It impedes the tasks of autocleaning, innoculation, disinfection, or virus removal.
- Even an antivirus program residing on your computer will not be able to carry out all its functions.
- Deep Freeze interferes with ScanDisk and defragmentation of volumes.
- Upon computer restart, Deep Freeze reverts to the baseline configuration of the computer.
- It erases new software installations, configurations, and user settings.
- It defeats and overrides the restart required for flushing memory and properly registering new components in memory.
- It will not permit updates of virus information files, software patches, or new programs.
- Anyone needing the latest software patch or codec or application installation will have trouble working with Deep Freeze.
- Once memory is used on the computer during processing, Deep Freeze begins to stress out as it deals with new changes. The conflict arises because Deep Freeze maintains a separate file in memory of the computer's configuration, and Deep Freeze is happy as long as there is a close match between its file and the actual computer configuration. The computer may hang up and have to be restarted in order for the user to continue processing.
