{insert title here} was the first real project created under the name of Coolerthanyou Productions. It was a sketch comedy television show produced for and aired on West Georgia College's Cable13 (now the State University of West Georgia's UTV). The names of each episode were chosen to sound like possible latin words for the numbers 1-5 but were actually celebrity names. The first episode was called Uma and aired Halloween night 1996. Following Uma were Dumas (episode two: originally known as "tupac" until he was killed shortly before the episode's completion), Dre (episode three) and Fjord (episode four, airing in the summer of 1997). A fifth episode (Quentin) was shot but not edited and never aired.
the history of {insert title here}
"She's real purty" (episode dumas) was the genesis for it all. It
was written by Errol and Brooks at WWGC
(where they worked) one afternoon. Later that week Errol and Brooks were hanging
out with Sean and a number of other friends at the television studio (Sean worked
there at the time) and they suggested performing the sketch and videotaping
it. They proceeded to do so, only to find out afterwards that the tape had not
been rolled properly. Sadly, this "pilot" sketch was never recorded,
but the process was so much fun that the group decided to explore the possibility
of shooting an actual show. A number of sketches were written, and after much
wrangling Sean was able to convince those in charge of the television studio
to allow us to shoot the sketches. We were even able to convince the department
to lend us students to use as crew giving them studio credit. Armed with material,
crew, and a cast made up of our friends, "Episode Uma" was recorded
in the summer of 1996. It took an entire quarter to shoot and edit, and finally
aired Halloween night 1996. This first episode introduced the characters of
Dirk and Stevie who, along with the turlet guy (in a cameo), were the only characters
to appear in all four episodes. The cast of this show was primarily made up
of
Sean, Brooks,
Errol,
Tommy,
and Bert.
"Episode Dumas" was next. It included the "turlet guy" sketch ("slow turlet" was the actual title). This sketch was shot for episode uma but during editing we discovered that there was no room for it. This episode also included the aforementioned "she's real purty," this time shot properly. It introduced new cast members Lori Burnette (she was a member of the Uma crew), Sheila Ervin, and Dawn Hammond.
Quickly on the heels of Dumas came "Episode Dre: the sitcom episode." This episode was written and shot to look like an episode of a sitcom (Happy Family was the name later given during an episode of the radio show). This episode introduced new cast member David Payton. This episode is most notable for the mauled by bear sketch. This sketch featured two innocent campers who are bullied by a territorial bear. The only bear suit we were able to acquire was the Shoney Bear costume from the local Shoneys restaurant. We meant to cover the logo with a leather jacket but couldnt get the jacket to fit so we simply shot the sketch as planned with the Shoneys logo front and center. The restaurant was understandably upset and called the College which immediately pulled the episode, giving us our first taste of censorship. The incident made the front page of the local newspaper and gave us a good bit of publicity. We re-edited the show replacing the Shoneys footage with shots from Hercules in New York that feature Schwarzeneggar fighting a bear in central park.
Episode Fjord: the dramatic episode was our finest hour and, ultimately, the final episode. It was intentionally melodramatic, revisited many characters like Dirk and Stevie, the kung-fu pillow guys, the Detective, and even Mr. Sock in a dramatic light. We didnt intend for this to be the last episode, but ultimately it worked out well as a finale, with the musical montage at the end especially poignant in such a context.
We planned on making a fifth episode named Quentin, and even shot a number of sketches for it, but by the Fall of 1997 the Golden Boys screenplay, Sublimation, and other ventures distracted us from {insert title here} and we never returned.
The show was recorded on VHS (on a Panasonic AG456 to be exact) and edited on linear insert editors (heres a pic of one of the editing suites we used). In 2002 Brooks captured the shows to DVD with the assistance of the always helpful Jason Wilson.
All
of the material shot for episode Quentin was compiled by Brooks for inclusion
in the Coolerthanyou Collection DVD set and Sean has plans for putting together
Episode Quentin as an actual completed episode with his planned special edition
dvds. We also hope plans to make the shows available to download one day. Well
keep you posted
