Medicinal Cannabis

Many patients and their doctors find cannabis a useful medicine as part of the treatment for AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, and other ailments. Yet the federal government allows only seven patients in the United States to use marijuana as a medicine, through a program now closed to new applicants. Federal laws treat all other patients currently using medical marijuana as criminals. Doctors are presently allowed to prescribe cocaine and morphine but not cannabis.

Organizations that have endorsed medical access to marijuana include: the AIDS Action Council, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Public Health Association, American Academy of HIV Medicine, American Nurses Association, Lymphoma Foundation of America, National Association of People With AIDS, the state medical associations of New York, California, and Rhode Island, and many others.

The Findings:

Virtually every government-appointed commission to investigate marijuana's medical potential has issued favorable findings. These include the U.S. Institute of Medicine in 1982, the Australian National Task Force on Cannabis in 1994, and the U.S. National Institutes of Health Workshop on Medical Marijuana in 1997.

The Injustice:

Tens of thousands of seriously ill people who presently use marijuana as a therapeutic agent to alleviate symptoms of cancer, AIDS, glaucoma, or multiple sclerosis risk arrest and jail to obtain and use their medication.

Marijuana prohibition applies to everyone, including the sick and dying. Of all the negative consequences of prohibition, few are as tragic as the denial of medicinal cannabis to the tens of thousands of patients who could benefit from it's therapeutic use. Basic compassion and common sense demand we allow seriously ill citizens to use whatever medication their physicians' deem safe and effective to alleviate their pain and suffering.

The Justification for Allowing Suffering?

Cannabis is the pharmaceutical industries worst nightmare. An herb that you can grow in your yard that can alleviate a host of ailments. So it's argue medical marijuana must regulated in "safer" forms such as sprays or pills so the doses can be controlled. This is simply a ploy to regulate and privatize an herb which anyone could and should be able to grow. It is also a terrable excuse to maintane the corrupt and unconstitutional war against patiants relieved by cannabis.

The fact is cannabis is one of the safest "drug" in the world. Cannabis can be eaten or vaporized to avoid any ill affects associated with inhaling smoke. But even smoked, cannabis has never in hisotory been attributed to a single death. That couldn't be said for most legal drugs which kill over 10,000 people a year.

"Cannabis a Medical Miracle"

According to the results of the first clinical trials of the drug, Cannabis is a 'wonder drug' capable of radically transforming the lives of very sick people. Tests sanctioned by the Government are proving far more successful than doctors, patients and cannabis campaigners ever dared hope. Some of the patients are simply calling it a "miracle". Tests sanctioned by the UK government started last year, suggest that 80 per cent of those taking part have derived more benefit from cannabis than from any other drug.

Doctor Willy Notcutt, of James Paget Hospital in Great Yarmouth, said the trial was a success: 'The results have exceeded what I dared hope for. We're getting 80 per cent of patients good-quality benefit from the cannabis. For some we are getting almost total relief from their pain, with pain scores going down to zero.'
