COMMENTARY / QUICK HITS

Rotation 1

Since no teams for the senior portion would need a bye, this would be a straight through competition. Gymnasts would need to be four up-four count for Corina Cannoli. Also, Cannoli was requiring that every senior perform two vaults, regardless of whether they planned for a berth in event finals or not.

Starting off on vault, Senior A did well with no vault specialist on their team. Gwen Colger's vault that counted was a solid 9.275, although her second vault was nowhere near that well. Tessa Pollock was below the 9.275 on her first vault, but did enough on her second one to secure a place in vault finals. Kelly Simms came up huge with two vaults and her better one counted. Unfortunately, Lily Schneider, last one up, did not have a good vaulting day.

Team B had the advantage of one extra person, the World All Around Silver Medalist and last year's Junior National Champion but even that didn't seem to help on uneven bars. Albert, Maddux and Xin all faultered, leaving a big gap to fill by Haylee Kipling and Zipporah Valdez. Kipling did her job by nailing her set cold, opening the door for Valdez' score to be even higher. In a routine filled with the potential to meet that challenge, it also has the potential for the risk to make a mistake. And this was the case tonight as Valdez missed a connection and took a large step on her dismount. Luckily, we'll still see her in event finals.

Team C oddly had the biggest advantage going into the competition on paper with the nation's top two ranked seniors. This wasn't planned by Corina Cannoli, as she would have preferred the two to go against each other on teams, rather than be paired up against the rest of the field. But that is the way the teams worked out and the coordinator is still anxious to see how they do working together. Starting off their rotation was Soleil Star, and while her beam set was not perfect, it posted a respectable 9.2. Davenport followed up with a 9.7 and Sloane capitolized on it further with a 9.75. This again provided an opportunity for last up, Tanguay, to do something big. And again, it was not to be. She too faultered slightly and scored a 9.2.

Standings
Team: C-28.65, A-27.975, B-27.875
All Around: Kipling, Sloane-9.75, Davenport-9.7, Simms-9.575

Rotation 2

Team A's woes continued on uneven bars. Simms led off with a 9.525 but Schneider, Pollock and Colger all struggled after her. They would have to hope that the move to the next rotation, beam, would bring up their team total to be able to compete with Teams B & C.

Team B had a better time on beam with Haylee Kipling continuing to shine. Zipporah Valdez also rebounded after her bar performance to post a nice score as well. The rest of the team struggled with connections and nerves.

Team C continue to roll, with all four teammembers posting scores above 9 on floor. Misty Tanguay and Kylie Davenport will be the ones going to event finals.

Standings
Team: C-56.85, B-56.15, A-55.725
All Around: Kipling-19.3, Davenport-19.2, Simms-19.1. Sloane-19.05

Rotation 3

Team C moved to vault and continued to do well, with all teammembers scoring above 9 so that they could drop Jenessa Sloane's score. Soleil Star once again showed that she is tops on vault with a huge second vault that should bode well for event finals.

A continued to struggle on balance beam and once again it was Kelly Simms who came up big. The team is still quite a ways behind the other two teams.

Team B had a great day on floor, which seems to be the highest scoring event in the competition. Thus far, no one has scored lower than 9.2. Ubu Xin may not have the biggest score of the night on the event, but it puts her in striking distance for event finals.

Standings
Team: C-84.925, B-84.375, A-83.000
All Around: Simms-28.8, Kipling-28.525, Davenport-28.425, Valdez-28.125

Rotation 4

Team B went to vault on this rotation and while there were some good vaults thrown, some were on the second vault which ultimately did not count towards the team total, not helping them to get any closer to team C.

C ended on bars and even though they had a sizeable lead over the other two teams, they were able to increase it with three of their scores going higher than 9.4. They easily took the team title.

Even with Gwen Colger and Tessa Pollock's strong performances on floor, Team A was missing something from Lily Schneider. She struggled all night long and it was especially evident on her best event.
