Jake grew up in a small town. 

Joined Starfleet, where he excelled in fighter combat, along with hand to hand. Soon he found himself with the Secret Service where he excelled in special ops and dirty work that Starfleet would deny having a hand in. After several years he was asked to join the Starfighter as her XO. 

Starfleet believing his experience with the unusual and difficult would help to make her mission a success.
