Storm Wings

This curious and unique item appears to be a heavy, sleeveless leather jerkin, dyed blue and decorated with delicate, intricate inlays of metal wire. Mounted on the jerkin’s back, where the wearer’s shoulder blades would be, are two draconic wings of the same blue as the jerkin. Although natural-seeming, these are in fact mechanical constructs, cleverly jointed to move in the same manner as a dragon’s wings; if stretched out, the wingspan is 14’ wide. The whole construction weighs roughly 20 pounds, and radiates strongly if Detect Magic is cast.

The Storm Wings - a name given to the device by its discoverer, Simon Krebinz of Glantri - grants the wearer (it is sized for a human male of average build) the power to Fly at a speed of 180’/turn (manuverability class B), for up to an hour at a time, 3 times per day. The wings respond to the wearer’s mental commands as if natural parts of his anatomy, providing lift, thrust and steering capability - without using them, the wearer can only hover in place.

The device is powered by electrical energy; If desired, the wearer can release a small (2d6) Lightning bolt from each wingtip three times per day. The flexibility of the wings allows the wearer to touch the wingtips together when firing, generating one 5d6 Lightning Bolt between them, if desired.

The Storm Wings can release a total of 24d6 worth of electrical "charges" per week without depleting its power-source. if this is exceeded, the power-pack will be drained, and the device loses all magical power. The Storm Wings can be recharged by firing at least 30d6 worth of Lightning Bolts (from any source) at the chest-portion of the jerkin. However, each time this is done, there is a flat 15% chance that the power-pack melts down, destroying the item completely.

The Storm Wings’ origin is currently unknown; it was discovered in a troll lair in the Broken Lands ten years ago by a group of Glantrian adventurers. The style of its manufacture strongly resembles that of devices attributed to the lost Empire of Blackmoor, but this item is obviously far too new to have originated so long ago.
