In the year 1977, the space exploration vehicle Voyager was launched amid much fanfare. The group of scientists working on the project, including the late author of "Cosmos," Dr. Carl Sagan, decided to include in the vehicle's cargo a small gold recording, which, when played, would greet the inhabitants of remote worlds with the sounds of Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart. This recording was to be a representation to our galactic neighbors of the high level of civilization reached by the occupants of our small blue world. Thus far, we have received no response. But I have always found it interesting (and wonderful!) that, of all of humanity's achievements, the art form of music was selected to represent the pinnacle of human civilization.
Music speaks to all of us.....even the most "primitive" cultures have music in some form. It is a universal language. Studies have shown that even unborn children respond to the sounds of music. The words of our songs reflect the dreams, fears, desires, and hopes of the generations. Music is among the few things in this world which are accessible to ALL members of humanity ~ regardless of one's income level, education, or place in society.
Since the topic of music is such an enormous one, this website alone cannot even begin to do justice to it. Nevertheless, it is our hope that you will find it a valuable resource. In these pages, you will find links to the great music sites of the GeoCities Heartland community, information about the value of music in child education and development, and a wealth of resources to help you continue your music education. Enjoy!
