December 25th, 2004 - "Undeserved
Gifts"
We
all like getting gifts. Who wouldn't? You get a whole bunch of stuff
that you didn't have to do anything for, and you don't have to pay for
any of it. Pretty sweet deal. But the gifts that are the best, are the
ones you know you really don't deserve.
One year when I was a kid, I wanted a Lego Train Set for Christmas, and
of course my parents told me that I had to be really good if I wanted
it. Every time I acted up, my mom would remind me of the train set. She
had to remind me a lot...
I hadn't lived up to my end of the deal, because I'd been anything but really good, but come Christmas
morning, there was the train set waiting for me. I knew full well that
I hadn't deserved it, and my parents didn't have to get it for me, but
they did anyway.
At that point, it was the best gift I'd ever gotten.
Somebody else gave me a gift that I didn't
deserve. Being a sinful human, separated from the presence of God, I
deserved death. Instead, God came down to earth as a baby, lived as a
human, like me, and died in my place. And when he rose from the dead,
he promised that if I accepted this gift from him, I would live with
him forever in his kingdom. It took me a lot of pain and trouble before
I finally accepted his gift at 17. I deserved death, but God gave me
life in the form of Jesus Christ, God the Son.
He gave his life as a gift for anyone who
would accept. Though we all deserve death, he gives life and freedom.
This gift is yours. Accept it. What better gift could you ever receive?
Merry Christmas! :)
