Other points of interest (POI) These points of interest will be placed on a larger scale map. (A small-scale map shows less detail, but a larger land area. For instance, a USAnational map is a much smaller-scale map than a map showing the details of the City of Fort Lauderdale. Objects appear larger on a large-scale map.) In random order (as people suggest them), here are points of interest Architectural POI Schubert Motel (fabulous line with the sign on the entrance) >>>>>>>>> see also: Publix at David Blvd and 35th street Historical POI Al Capone House: Two blicks south of Harmony Isle store in Gateway Plaza The Gateway Shopping Plaza is the first shopping center in Broward County. The Gateway Cinema celebrated its 50th anniversary recently (2001?). Artistic POI Gateway Shopping Center -- in particular, Harmony Isle Gallery (a favorite location for spontaneous artistic displays, such as the "Yellow shows on telephone pole") and the blue bicycles near the International Bicycle Shop Mural on the wall south of Gateway Cinema (on the south wall fo the convenience store): a nice On Las Olas: The Mural on the south side of the Floridian Restaurant. The Bogota Symposium From: Anthony Abbate [mailto:anthonyabbate@earthlink.net] Subject: Bogota Symposium Through the Arango Design Foundation and with the help of local sponsors, including Tom Gustafson, there will be a symposium and presentation of the Bogota Project in October in Fort Lauderdale. The invited guest presenters include Dr. Enrique Penalosa, Ex-Mayor of Bogota who was instrumental in getting the project underway; Mr. Jose Salazar, Director of the "Taller de la Ciudad" (City-Studio) who was responsible for the overall design of the infrastructure and urban design elements; and Mr. Lorenzo Castro, Director of Planning and Logistics for the project. They will describe the public process and the design process for this remarkable project which won the Stockholm Challenge Award in 2000, being selected from among 600 cities world-wide. Interesting viewpoints about walking Do you have opinions about how to make Fort Lauderdale a "more walkable" city? How can the streets become "friendly to pedestrians?" Definition of a Freudian slip = you say one thing and you mean your mother. |
What is the proposed "History and Art Walk" in Fort Lauderdale? 1. The History Walk already exists: A plaque north of the Main Library shows where the History Walk is located. It is suggested that the H/ARTWalk should extend from the existing History Walk. 2. Can we create a walk to link the art and history of our city? Can this walk be marked in the sidewalk with signs or special plaques? Is there a way to entice local residents (who tend to drive from place to place within the downtown area) to turn into pedestrians and walk about their city? Are you a long-time resident who can't remember who Napoleon Bonaparte Broward was? The History/Art Walk (the H/ARTWalk) is also called the aha!Walk since it highlights architecture, history and art in Fort Lauderdale. This idea/proposal is looking for sponsors and supporters. |
