ASSIGNMENT 1

Read the following information thoroughly BEFORE beginning this assignment and follow each step in consecutive order.

There are 2 parts to this assignment

This assignment will be evaluated as 5% of your final mark.
This assignment must be completed by Midnight on Thursday, January 15, 2004.
Late assignments will receive a mark of zero.
Incompleteness or not completing this assignment as required will be reflected in the evaluation given.

PART 1:

(1) Access Yahoo!GeoCities

(2) Establish a Canadian website and email account with a website name in the following format:

cfadw_yourstudentnumber

You put in your own student number in place of: yourstudentnumber.
For example: cfadw_101234567

(3)When signing up for the Canadian !GeoCities website, where it asks for an alternate email account, enter a different email account address. It won't work if you enter another Yahoo email account. If you forget your password, Yahoo sends it to the alternate email address.
Make sure that the birthdate you use makes you at least 18 years old.

(4) After you submit the website application form, you will be asked if you want Yahoo!GeoCities to set up a Yahoo email account for you (you do).
Sign up for Canadian Yahoo!GeoCities email using your own first and last names.

(5) Do not sign up for any emailings, etc. that are offered except for the required banner advertising which should be "computers and the internet". You will have to deselect any emailings, etc. which are preselectedfor you.

If you have correctly completed the signup process, you will be notified, on the screen, that you have a yahoo ID, email address, and website.

Your Yahoo ID should be
: cfadw_yourstudentnumber

Your Canadian !GeoCities Email Address should be: cfadw_yourstudentnumber@yahoo.ca

Your Canadian !YahooGeoCities URL (website address) should be: http://ca.oocities.com/cfadw_yourstudentnumber

(6) Make sure you write down the information and your password.

(7) Logout of your website account.

PART 2:

Before you continue with part 2:

Make sure that your website can be accessed through using your web browser and your Canadian Yahoo!GeoCities URL to access your new Yahoo!GeoCities website.
The URL will be in the following format:
http://ca.oocities.com/cfadw_yourstudentnumber
If the URL is correct and the website has been established and is working properly, a website placeholder page with a notice on it will appear on the screen.
If it doesn't work, determine why, fix it, then continue.

FIRST A:

Send a test email from your CFADW course Yahoo!GeoCities email account, to that same account, according to the following directions:

(1) Access Yahoo!GeoCities at: Yahoo!GeoCities

(2) Sign into your Yahoo!GeoCities website.

(3) Scroll down to the bottom of the page where there is a box filled with underlined words and click on:
mail.

(4) At the left of your email account web page, click on: Compose.

(5) Enter the recipient's email address (your own) in To: cfadw_yourstudentnumber@yahoo.ca
(cfadw_yourstudentnumber is your actual Yahoo!GeoCities ID, i.e. cfadw_101234567)

(6) Enter the email Subject: cfadw_yourstudentnumber website setup completed

(7) Enter your Yahoo! email address in Cc: cfadw_yourstudentnumber@yahoo.ca

(8) In the box where the message goes, type the complete URL of your website: http://ca.oocities.com/cfadw_yourstudentnumber

Make sure the URL is correct!

(9) Press the enter key so that the cursor goes to the next line under the URL you typed.

(10) Below the Cc: textbox, click on the checkbox for: Save copy to Sent folder

(11) Click on: Send in the Yahoo email composer page.

(12) A confirmation page should appear. Find the line that states: View messages in your Inbox and click on: Inbox

(13) You should have 2 messages from your own email account, the To: message and the Cc: message. If the Internet is slow, you may have to wait a while for the messages to be received.

(14) Open one of those messages and determine if the URL you typed into your message works as a hyperlink to your own CFADW website (it should).

(15) If there is a problem, try and figure out what went wrong and retry. (It may just be a typographical error.) If all is well, Sign Out

THEN B:

Send an email from your own course Yahoo!GeoCities email account to the CFADW course Yahoo!GeoCities email account according to the following directions:

(1) Access Yahoo!GeoCities at: Yahoo!GeoCities

(2) Sign into your Yahoo!GeoCities website.

(3) Scroll down to the bottom of the page where there is a box filled with underlined words and click on:

(4) At the left of your email account web page, click on: Compose.

(5) Enter the recipient's email address in To: crn43003@yahoo.ca

(6) Enter the email Subject: cfadw_yourstudentnumber website setup completed

(cfadw_yourstudentnumber is your actual Yahoo!GeoCities ID, i.e. cfadw_101234567)

(7) Enter your Yahoo! email address in Cc: cfadw_yourstudentnumber@yahoo.ca

(8) In the box where the message goes, type the complete URL of your website: http://ca.oocities.com/cfadw_yourstudentnumber

Make sure the URL is correct!

(9) Press the enter key so that the cursor goes to the next line under the URL you typed.

(16) If there is a problem, try and figure out what went wrong and retry. If all is well, Sign Out

(17) Logout of your email and website. If you don't logout, your email and website will be open for others to use.
