Possibly the oldest in the world, the Namib desert covers thousands of square miles with red sands that look as if the sun were constantly setting.

For first timers, I cant imagine a better way of seeing this unearthly landscape than from the air.  A 6-seat Cessna, handled expertly by one of the very capable African pilots, flew us over the "valley of the moon" in the Swakop River valley, the red sand dunes, the shipwrecks, and finally, at a cautious distance, the pink clouds of flamingos over the Sandwich lagoon near Walvis Bay.

My heart beat with anticipation.  That was the awesome landscape that would embrace and marvel me in the days to come, as we headed by land to our camp in the desert.
