For many Wiccans the Goddess is seen in her three aspects as Maiden, Mother and Crone.
- Maiden
- The Maiden is that aspect that is strong, independent, spontaneous, intuitive and
playful. She is the virgin -- only in the sense that she is independent from men.
She is the huntress. She is whole unto herself. She is the Enchantress! The
Maiden in her bright aspect is associated with Spring, new life and birth. In her dark
aspect she is associated with the Autumnal Equinox and the darkening of the year. Some of
the goddess that represent the Maiden are:
Persephone
Adriadne
Artemis
Kore
Athene
Nimu
Beudowedd
Boudicea

- Mother
- The Mother aspect has six basic powers: birthing, nurturance, sexuality, organization
and love. In ancient tribal cultures women were the natural midwives and welcomes of
the new born. The mother-to-be was treated with loving care and seen as the Goddess
incarnate. Like birthing, healing was once the province of women. It was understood
that the spirit as well as the body must be tended. Knowledge of herbs and their psychic
as well as medicinal properties was central to these ancient healers. Nurturance is
typified by the mother child bond. It was once held in the highest esteem, now it is
one of the lowliest tasks in the patriarchal value system. Organization can be seen in the
exquisite precision with which the Goddess organizes her universe. The love of the Mother
Goddess is the glue that holds that highly organized universe together. Sexuality and the
sexual fire is essential to the Mother Goddess and to magic. Witches often raise
kundalini or sexual fire in their rituals and spells. Some of the Goddesses that
represent the Mother are:

- Crone
- The Crone is the third and final aspect of the three-fold Goddess. She is the dark
moon, the winter time the knower and teacher of the mysteries. When Persephone
enters the underworld, she is really going deep within and spending time with the Crone,
to learn the deeper mysteries of life. The Crone phase begins as the silver appears in our
hair and we become her fully when we begin menopause. This aspect of the Goddess is
by far the most maligned in the patriarchal culture. Old women are not valued,
honored or respected. They are not allowed to contribute their considerable wisdom
to society. We need to regain the Crone and elevate her status as wise woman, healer
and teacher. Indeed, the Crone holds within her all three aspects of the Goddess and
is the most powerful because of it. Some of the Goddesses that represent the crone
are:
Hecate
Kali
Baba Yaga
Morrigan
Medusa
Hel
Morag
Ersh-Kigal
