There are two two basic types:

• Indexes (Web directories)
  • Organized by major categories
  • Each category is further organized into subcategories
  • Can continue search of subcategories until a list of relevant documents appear.
  • Examples:
    • Yahoo
           
• Search Engines (Web Crawlers, Web Spiders)
  • Organized like a database.
  • Key words and phrases can be used to search through database.
  • Databases are maintained by special programs called agents, spiders, and bots.
  • Examples:
    • Alta Vista
    • Hotbot
    • WebCrawler
