Why would we want a Robotics programme?

Robotic kits, such as Robolab produced by Lego and available through Spectrum, and Mindstorms, available through Toys R use provide new ways to apply technology with creativity, understanding and confidence.  Students use hands-on lessons to challenge them to draw on their creativity, insight and imagination.

Using robotics kits such as, Robolab and Mindstorms, in a hands-on classroom environment, helps to promote various skills that are useful preparation for future careers in Science, Mathematics and Engineering. Some skills include:

Exploration

data management

measuring/ testing (reliability, strength, performance)

investigation

probability

hypothesizing

problem-solving

planning/predicting

designing

It is easier than ever for a teacher to implement these kits into their classrooms and to help immerse students in a learning environment that is active and fun-filled, an atmosphere where the classroom can comes alive while kids learn.

How would we get a robotic programme?

School Council has graciously agreed in principle to purchase Robotics kits.  Recommendations from the Ottawa Carleton Catholic District school Board are as follows:

Robolab is a challenging robotics kit designed for use in an educational setting. It is recommended for students 8 years and older and would benefit a grade 4-6 classroom because of its pre-designed curriculum related activities which overlap with Ontario's Math and Science expectations for the junior level.
