Why is Academic Writing So Hard?       Home    Top

Academic writing may be different than you have attempted before.

Because it is an argument?  http://www.unc.edu/depts/wcweb/handouts/argument.html

It may be different from secondary or other writing you have done http://www.brown.edu/Student_Services/Writing_Center/humaniti.htm

Academic Writing is different because it.....

Requires challenging and questioning research.

Students need to analyse facts from a point of view, and construct a persuasive argument with evidence that makes the point of view compelling. (Preus,N. p. 77)

Writer needs to construct own understanding of the topic.

Need to move away from reporting to:-

  • consider reader response (Is my writing boring? Have I persuaded or interested the reader? )
  • discuss ideas with others and develop an argument (story)
  • find research to agree and disagree with
  • less quotes, more own ideas
  • analysis not summary

Emphasis on reader awareness, rhetorical purpose ( questionning research and responding to questions the reader may ask), argument

Other Writing may be different because it.....

Only presents one side of an issue.  Does not use opposing views to show the complexity of the issue.  Seeks an account with which it is impossible to disagree.

Own opinion does not have to be based on texts.

Writer does not challenge, question and critically analyse information

Emphasis on opinion, not interpretation and argument.

Students tend to summarize source material where they see their theme appearing.

Lack of confidence, Tentative assertions

More unquestioned acceptance of printed word.

Emphasis on quantity, stating the commonplace, generalisations without support, opinion giving
