1. Family involvement - This is an essential part of Cub Scouting. When we speak about family, we mean whomever the boy calls his family. This may be a parent, grandparents, foster parents, guardians, or other relatives. The family involvement in scouting provides opportunities for them to work, play, and just have fun together.
2. Duty to God - The Cub Scouts believed that no member can grow without recognizing an obligation to God. We believe patriotism plays a significant role in preparing our nations youth to become useful and participating citizens. A Cub Scout leans his duty to God, country, others, and self.
3. Cub Scout Motto - Do your best. This is one of the most important things for a Cub Scout to learn. One boy's best may be quite different than another. It's important that no one find fault with them, if they are always doing their best.
4. Discipline - At any age, the boys have good days and gad days. It is best to set rules and stand by them. Often boys tend to be noisy and out of control. The Cub Scout sign is used to get attention, and it is expected for them to put on their listening ears at that time. Physical aggression and put-downs will not be tolerated. If a leader deems necessary the parent will be requested to stay for the den meetings, and if it continues, the boy may be asked to leave the pack. We hop it will never come to this, but please understand, we need to be fair to all of the scouts.
5. Uniforms - We would like to see all boys have their uniform shirt by the Pinewood Derby race pack meeting. All of you should have been given the uniform checklist when you registered. The Scout Shop is located at 1659 E. Euclid Ave. in Des Moines. They are very helpful.
6. Akela - Akela is a family member, Cub Scout leader, Cub Master, or teacher. Akela is responsible for signing off on the different achievements in the Cub Scout Book, Akela's OK. The den leader will then record these achievements for his rewards.
7. Awards - As a Tiger, they earn the Tiger badge first, and then they can work on obtaining their Bobcat badge. The Bobcat badge must be earned prior to receiving their Wolf, Bear, or Webelo badge. There are several requirements that will need to be completed in order to receive these badges. Some of these requirements should be done with parents, as well as in den meetings. Please take the time to review their books as a parent and a leader and sign your name as Akela's OK.
8. Dues - Most of the achievements require doing an activity. Please be aware dues may be required by the den leader. Or you may offer your assistance in providing materials for all the boys in the den. This will be up to you and your leader.
