Cupid says he likes where he lives.

He lives in a 10 gallon aquarium with about 6-8 inches of organic potting soil.  I made sure before I bought it that there was absolutely no pesticides, fertilizers, or manure in the soil.  Didn't want Cupid getting sick from it, or worse. Before adding this soil I also baked it at 300 degrees for about an hour and a half to kill of any micro-organisms that might have taken up residence. Microwaving for a couple minutes also works, but I had to go with the oven because my microwave is pretty small.

In the terrarium is a small plant, rocks and a piece of bark.  Cupid likes the plant quite a bit and I've even caught him trying to climb up it a few times. The piece of balsa wood bark I hollowed out with a knife. This almost looks like a little garage. He also has a large flat rock I picked up a few miles from my old house. Since this came from the outside world, I boiled it for about 20 minutes after washing it with anti-bacterial soap. The white disk in the photos is Cupid's water dish. He can be seen drinking and bathing in it from time to time. I took the lid from a tartar sauce jar, washed it with anti-bacterial soap and boiled for several minutes before using it. Cupid has me wash it weekly with anti-bacterial soap as well.

I try my best to keep his soil somewhat moist.  Not wet, but if you put your hand on it, you can notice that there is some moisture there.  Inside it stays around 80-95F degrees with 80% humidity.  They both very from day to day, but not much. I spray the soil 2 times a day with water to keep it moist.

I regulate the heat with a 60watt red colored heat lamp. The lamp itself I bought at a hardware store for $5. It is the same 5 1/5" reflector lamp they have at pet shops for 3 times the price. I use a red heat lamp because:

  • Scorpions cannot see the color red
  • blacklight heat lamps could make him stop glowing eventually
  • and cause Cupid, like most other scorpions, don't like bright daylight-like light

The heat lamp puts out a lot of heat so I have it hanging from my wall. I have a row of small nails about 4" apart moving up and down. This allows me to control the temperature instide the tank.

When using the heat lamp, it is important to keep the soil moist. The lamp heats the soil which evaporates the moisture in the soil which affects the humidity inside the tank.
