Like branches on a tree we grow in different directions
Yet our roots remain as one.
Each of our lives will always be a special part of the other.
Peter  D. Curtin (1942-2004) was the son of Joseph Curtin and Marie, nee Gratten who married in 1939.  Joseph being one of the children of Peter Curtin and Ellen, nee Ryan who lived in the Skaneateles area.

Peter Curtin  (born 1869 died 1950)  served as Supervisor for the Town of Niles about 1905 and then bought a farm on West Lake Road in Skaneateles where he raised his family.

Peter, born at Bear Swamp, was the son of Bartholomew Curtin 1838-1903 and Elizabeth, nee Brennan who married in 1864 in New York State.

This Curtin line is part of what is known affectionately as "The Bear Swamp Curtins".

Bartholomew Curtin  was born in December 1838  in Co Limerick,  Ireland, one of the son's of John David Curtin of Co Cork  and his wife Mary Curtin from the Mt Collins area in Co Limerick, Ireland.  They married in the Newmarket Parish, Co Cork on 26 February 1835.

John and Mary and children,  took up farmland in Bear Swamp, town of Sempronicus, after their arrival from Ireland,  and later sold this farm to older  son Bartholomew.
Bart and wife Elizabeth had 14 children, 7 living to adulthood on their farm on Bear Swamp Road near the corner of  Curtin Road.

Little did John and Mary Curtin  know, when they arrived in the USA per the "Constellation" on 9 July 1855, to begin their great adventure in a new land,  that one of their great-great grandsons would become a very proficient and interesting genealogist with over 20 years experience in tracing his family background locally and in Ireland.

Today Peter's grandchildren are in a direct line of 7 generations of documented Curtin's.

John David Curtin born about 1795 in Co Cork, died in 1888 in New York State.  He married Mary Curtin born about 1808 in Co Limerick, who died 1890 in 1835 in Ireland. This marriage joined together 2 different Curtin families from townlands in 3 counties all close to each other.

John's parents were David Curtin born about 1745/50 in Co Kerry and Elizabeth Emperor from the Rockchapel area of Co Cork.  David's father was also a David and his headstone in the Brosna graveyard  (Co Kerry) stated that he died 31 July 1764 aged 42 years.

Mary's parents were Bartholomew and  Catherine  Curtin of Mt Collins, a townland in lower Co Limerick, very close to where the county meets the counties of both Kerry and Cork.

Bartholomew was baptised in Monagea Parish, Co Limerick  on 7 September 1783 and his parents Daniel Curtin and Catherine Kellery are listed as living in the townland of Templeglantine, Co Limerick  at that time.
