TAPIR LODGE

Tapir Lodge is based in the north eastern Province of Sucumbios, in the upper Ecuadorian Amazon region, within the Cuyabeno Faunistic Production Reserve, and was built in partnership with some family members of the Siona Community and private sponsors.

This special spot in the flooded forest of the Cuyabeno lagoons
is known as a sanctuary of river dolphins, otters, manatis,
prehistoric hoatzins, howler monkeys, and many other species
of fauna from the tropical rain forest.



The virgin forest surrounded by 14 lakes of this Igapo ecosystem, provides you with the best opportunities to see diurnal mammals, so as the prehistoric arapaima fish, and the well known pirahnas.

We offer you 4 to 6-days trips, visiting untouched rainforest, combining with 3 to 4 hrs. of jungle treks and boat drives in the amazing Laguna Grande (Big Lagoon), where you can enjoy the most espectacular sensets ever seen in the Amazonia.

SERVICES

Tapir Lodge has a capacity for 30 passengers, that accomodate in double room with private bathrooms in 3 different bungalows, each of them with space for 8 guests.

Our goal is to construct a 17 m. (48 ft) water tower, with 3 cabins, type suits on it, that will offer an extraordinary view of the surroundings.

All the rooms have hammocks and little balconies. The whole infraestructure is made of wood and the finishings are covered with beautiful bamboo pieces. The roof is thached, following the native Quichua and Siona Architecture, who are part of this unique environment.

Our cuisine offers international and local first class dishes, using
a lot of Ecuadorian exotic fressh fruits and vegetables, all with the
best standards of safety and cleanliness.

A small boutique, stocks, essential items, as well as local
handicrafts and souvenirs.

PROGRAMS

The activities are design by our multilingual
naturalist guides, which have knowledge in
handling guests in this outstanding environment.

The Cuyabeno Faunistic Reserve has more than 560 different species of birds; 60 species of orchids; over 350 species of fish; a big variety of reptiles (anacondas, caimans, turtles, ect.) and many species of mamals, including the incredible Tapirus terrestris (tapir), which gave the name to our exclusive lodge.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Depart from Quito to Lago Agrio, drive to the Cuyabeno Reserve. Box lunch. Canoe down the Cuyabeno river. Dinner and overnight in our lodge.

DAY 2: Breakfast. We will hike through primary forest with our naturalist guide. Good opportunity to see diurnal mammals, reptiles and birds. Lunch. In the afternoon, pirahna fishing and refreshing dip into the Cuyabeno lagoon. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: Early breakfast; birdwatching. Visit to the Siona Indians. Lunch. At night, we shall look for caymans and be part of the nocturnal wildlife. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 4: Breakfast. Exploration in different laguns of the reserve, using in some of them a Quilla (indian boat); good chances
to admire fresh water dolphins, arapaimas,
prehistoric hoatzins and monkeys. Return to our lodge in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 5: After an early breakfast, birdwatching. Then, we make our way back to Lago Agrio, where we will take our flight or our bus to Quito.

CLIMATE

It is a tropical rain forest, with a precipitation of 3000 to 4000 m.m. a year, and a humidity between 85 to 95%.
From December to March we have a marked dry season; the rainy season goes from April to July: and from August to November; it is moderate.
The mean annual temperature ranges over 25 centigrade degrees.

ETHNOLOGY

Many indigenous communities live in the bounderies of two important rivers known as Aguarico and Cuyabeno, in particular Cofanes and Secoyas, both legendary in this area.
The Siona community inhabits the upper part of the Cuyabeno Reserve, at Puerto Bolivar and the river Tarapuy.

Due to the importance of keeping the native traditions and customs of these communities, we work in partnership, and we share with them the ecotourism activities and profits.
