I am a stong believer in Early Literacy, and I like to start the year off with an emphasis on sound/symbol recognition. We follow a set routine so the students know what to expect each week.
Letter charts
At the beginning of each week I introduce the letter for that week. We make a chart together of all the words they can think of that start with that letter. Beside each word I draw a picture (to the best of my ability) to help them find the word later. I keep this chart up all week for the students to refer to, and at the end of the week, I keep the charts on a flip chart for easy referal.
Letter Books
After we have brainstormed to words that begin with our letter, we practice printing the letter correctly. I have small printing books, and they practice upper and lower case letters in this book. At this time I can see not only how they are forming their letters, but also who needs more work on fine motor control (are they having trouble manipulating their pencils, and to what degree.)
