Gary Young

Gary Young was born in Saint John but attended school in Moncton where he enjoyed a variety of sports at the highest competitive level including soccer, baseball, badminton, and volleyball.  He played his first basketball game in his senior year of high school for the Harrison Trimble Trojans and continued on to play five more years for the University of New Brunswick Red Raiders.

Gary began his teaching career in 1981 in Quebec City where he coached Holland Elementary School to three Mini Girls titles.  In 1984 he moved to Fredericton to teach and for the last fourteen years was the coach of the Fredericton High School Black Kats.

During Gary's fourteen year tenure as coach, the Kats  won ten New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association Provincial AAA Men's titles and numerous tournaments in Quebec, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.  He has long considered Sussex his home away from home with the hospitality and warmth of the people of Sussex exceeded no where in the basketball community of Eastern Canada. The Kats have won ten Dairy Town Classics including the last nine in a row.

Gary was awarded the N. B. I. A. A. Coach of the Year Award in 1990 and recently was again honored with the Basketball New Brunswick Coaches Award in 2001.
