Origin and History: As Gotham's district attorney, Harvey Dent was one of Batman's most trusted friends. Together with Captain Gordon, the three of them made a, um, dent in Gotham City's crime. But Dent became more and more unhinged from the strain of being D.A. He advocated a number of criminal acts in the course of pursuing justice, and Batman grew concerned.
Dent was trying to solicit testimony from crimelord Boss Maroni when Maroni splashed a bottle of acid in Dent's face. The left side of Dent's face was ruined, triggering a schism in Dent's personality that turned him into the criminal Two-Face. (While the recent Batman: The Long Halloween series showed new aspects of Two-Face's origin, it's a "Legends of the Dark Knight" story and isn't regarded as true continuity.)
As Two-Face, Dent has clashed with Batman many times, always making decisions with his father's coin. When the clean side comes up, Two-Face is moved to mercy. When the scarred side comes up, he's ruthless beyond imagining. Either way, confronting his old friend weighs heavily on Batman's soul.
