The Medal Grade, also known
as the Star Grade section, got underway on time. There were a few
amendments to the programme, but this did not hamper the smooth running
of the competition.
There were fewer entries at this competition,
compared to the previous two competitions, namely the Winter Festival and
the RDTA Grand Prix.
The Bronze section drew the most entries,
with over 110, from Juvenile through to Masters. Junior Ballroom
and Latin took the lead with 21 entries each, followed by Adult Ballroom
and Latin with 14 entries each.
Emphasis was once again placed on
the issue of dress code and syllabus. By and large, most studio’s
are taking these issues seriously. The matter of the dress code has
been argued back and forth for some time now. I for one, agree with
the dress code. In the Medal Grades, the emphasis is on dancing and
technique – preparation for the Dress Sections of the Novice, Pre-Championship
and ultimately the Championship levels.
Glitz and glitter attract attention,
and where these Stars of Tomorrow are still hard at work practicing and
training from level to level, the glamour and sparkle will highlight bad
footwork, etc. Those of us who know only too well the expression
of
“senior’s privilege” in school or college, understand the thrill of a couple
being promoted to Gold, and already planning the outfit for the dress section
ahead!
Prizes were presented at the end of
the Medal Grade section. Compere, Brian Hoosain, announced the winners
and finalists, adding the studio name of each couple. A lovely personal
touch. The sun had already set, and lighting was poor, but that did
not seem to be a problem for the excited couples, as they received their
trophies.
Entry forms for the Gauteng Provincial
Championships (28th October 2000) are available. Special note must
be made regarding these entry forms, as a photocopy of either the birth
certificate or identity document of each dancer must accompany the entry
form, along with the entry fees.
