Elevated Moon Beer Cubs Train Win !

On the elevated train under waxing new
moon, I went downtown to see a Movie.

Below the evening crescent, the train stopped
at Addison Platform - Wriggly Field, Cubs Park.

Under the upturned horns of the moon, baseball
stragglers staggered on board, half-drunk eyes
glittering their message, "Cubs win! Cubs win!"
I saw victory flashing within those liquid orbs
boarding my city train under a descending moon.

The ball game ended three hours ago, but now
these August Cubs fans, still celebrating, fell
laughing into the elevated train, their breath
heavy with beer, their eyes sparkling in triumph.

They sat down, popping open more beer cans
in the train rattling on the tracks under a
sinking moon. The hot, humid el car of the
night came filled with the heavy smell of brew,
a fermented fragrance of barley, oats and hops.

It seemed like the breath of the moon come down
to earth to celebrate a day of baseball victory.

They offered me one, and I accepted.

The amber crescent fell towards the horizon.
Our train rolled on toward downtown.

"Cubs win," I gratefully said, and
drank the goddess' golden breath.

I lived a year and a half in Chicago, on the north side. It is a great and exciting city. I am, however, sorry and not sorry to say that was the summer the Cubbies lost the pennant to the San Diego Padres.
