COALITION @ ZERO, SHEFFIELD 20/03/04 Kenny Ken returned to Sheffield along with his son, Crissy Cris, to rip it up for the steel city’s drum ‘n’ bass devotees. Sheffield’s drum ‘n’ bass scene has been floundering a little recently, allowing newer, smaller nights to come through and put on displays of quality, local up and coming talent. TK and TC-1 were on hand to show why they are without doubt Sheffield’s finest residents. The night was a little on the quiet side and felt a little too empty to ever really create any sort of warm atmosphere. There also appeared to be a few shady characters lurking around the place giving off moody vibes. Crissy Cris took to the decks along with Junior Red on the mic. Nobody was really sure what sort of set Cris was going to come out with, but thankfully the boy smashed it and delivered probably the best drum ‘n’ bass set any sixteen year old the world over come out with. His heavy beats got far too many rewinds which killed the vibe a little, but those that had managed to turn up to the new venue enjoyed the show regardless. In spite of an appallingly tweaked sound system the crowd inside Zero bounced along happily. Kenny Ken stepped up and delivered his typical blend of big beats and chunky basslines. MC Power took to the mic and killed the mood a little. It’s hard to rate an MC like Power at the moment considering the far better local talent around in Sheffield and Yorkshire. Tonn Piper was meant to be the headline MC for the night but he didn’t turn up, leaving Power and Junior Red to take mic duties with varying amounts of success. It could have been a much better night than it was. Coalition could be running things in Sheffield but it is going to take some time for them to re-establish the sort of credibility they have had previously. With rumours of Coalition going for broke on forthcoming line-ups it appears as if now is the time for Coalition to do or die and forever be remembered by Sheffield’s drum ‘n’ bass community.
