![]() LISA LASHES INTERVIEW Lisa Lashes is one of the UK’s busiest DJs and hottest exports at the moment. ‘I’ve been very busy,’ she says. ‘I’ve been all over the world. Since January I’ve played in Australia, New Zealand, China, South Africa, Amsterdam, and America, as well as doing lots of gigs around the UK. It’s quite a hectic time for me but it’s also very exciting.’ The first lady of hard dance has been entertaining packed dance-floors for years with her own unique style of extravagant, yet stylish, DJ sets. After playing her first gig on a boat on the River Severn, Lisa shot to fame as the new face of Sundissential. It was after seeing the sadly missed Tony De Vit that Lisa decided that the DJ game was the one she wanted to play. Lisa is also famed for her productions, which have included dance-floor smashes Unbelievable and Lookin’ Good. ‘I’ve been in the studio a lot recently. I’ve been working a lot with BK so watch this space.’ Lisa also has a knack of making killer mix albums, including the gloriously packaged Tidy Girls Annual, which was voted mix album of the year by 4clubbers.net in 2001. ‘I’ve got a mix album coming out in Australia soon, as well as a Prague cover-mount CD. I’m also doing a Mixmag cover-mount CD which will be out in a few weeks.’ Devoted fans of Lisa Lashes travel from all over the world to see their favourite DJ play out. One of her devoted fans went on to become her boyfriend after she spotted his familiar face in a crowd during a gig. The two have been together ever since, and DJ A-Star has a promising career ahead of him. ‘Things are great with A-Star right now. He’s fine, just taking things easy and keeping busy with the DJ side of things.’ But what of her other fans? ‘I love all my fans. They’re great. I have a family of teddy bears with knitted Lashed t-shirts on that was made for me. I’ve been given some lovely gifts like necklaces and jewellery, as well as perfume.’ Famed for cat suits, piercings and exuberant hair dye, you would have thought that Lisa was quite a character growing up in school. ‘I wasn’t too much of a rebel at school. I just got on with things really, like everyone else. I did hang around street corners though, with a few girls and guys, but nothing out of the ordinary I’m afraid to say.’ It is hard to imagine Lisa Lashes as a ‘normal’ school girl, but apparently this is exactly what she was. ‘I’ve changed a bit now though. I like to model myself on good, strong women, which is what I think I’ve become. I really look up to people like Kylie and Madonna. I think they are good role models for anyone.’ ‘I do a lot of interviews as you can imagine,’ says Lisa. So what is the most boring question Lisa gets asked? ‘I hate it when people ask me ‘how did you get into it?’ I must have been asked that same question about a million times. I really wish people would do their research and come up with something original.’ So what does the future hold for Miss Lashes? ‘I’ve got quite a lot coming up. Lashed has now gone international, which I am very pleased with, so that is taking up a lot of my time. We are putting on Lashed Live in London on May 2nd which I’m really excited about. We’ve got a really good, diverse line-up for that one.’ Lisa has made a lot of friends during her time on the DJ circuit. ‘Anne Savage is the most fun DJ to work with. We always get up to lots of mischief. I can’t tell you any secrets about her though. She’d kill me.’ Taking time out to relax from a busy schedule is essential for any hardworking DJ. Away from her decks and the studio Lisa says she just does ‘…normal things to be honest. I see friends, go to the cinema and go shopping a lot. I play bingo and pool too.’ Who would have guessed that Lisa Lashes plays bingo?! ‘I grew up listening to Elvis’ music. I’d love to be able to go back in time and work with him on some tracks.’ Lisa Lashes is not all about hard dance then. ‘I play breaks sometimes. It’s good to delve into other things every now and then, but I will always love hard house. It’s what made me who I am today.’ Lisa is an inspirational character to say the least. ‘I’m really happy at the moment. Things are going great. I pay far too much in taxes but apart from that life is pretty good. I’ve got a new BMW now too.’ After the tabloids shamed Stan Collymore by revealing his now infamous ‘dogging’ adventures, Lisa found out that the Range Rover she had recently purchased from Collymore was the same vehicle that he had used to pick up strangers for random sexual encounters in public places. ‘I was pretty horrified to be honest.’ Lisa will be DJing all over the world in the next couple of weeks.
