SCISSOR SISTERS, FEBRUARY 17 @ THE LEADMILL, SHEFFIELD

Scissor Sisters are, joyfully, a band that music journalists have been unable to pigeonhole and find a suitable musical comparison for. The New York five-piece look like kitsch pop stars from outer space and have acquired something of a world-wide cult following. Their self-titled debut album has received global critical acclaim and comes across with the sort of flair reserved only for the likes of David Bowie and Prince. Eleven thoughtful tracks cover everything from quirky, electro numbers to dark ballads and disco beats. Lead single ‘Comfortably Numb’ is a gorgeous take on Pink Floyd’s melancholic favourite, but even a track with this much flamboyance does not begin to signify the depth to their music.

Their first gig in Sheffield created a stir of excitement amongst small groups of people. Those at the Leadmill were treated to a visual and aural spectacle of the very finest pop music to come out of America since White Blood Cells. Ana Matronic and Jake Shears were extravagant and stylish in leading the show. Opening with the retro sounds of Take Your Mama Out, the show progressed through their debut album reaching a tremendous climax with the disco inspired Music is the Victim.
