RONI SIZE @ THE TUESDAY CLUB, SHEFFIELD 16/03/04

Tuesday March 16th will go down in history as the night Reprazent tore up the Foundry and put on one of the best live shows Sheffield has ever seen. The buzz surrounding this event was immense. The Foundry was already full by the time Tali stepped up with her band for the first of the night’s monumental acts. Tali excelled on stage, opening with dance-floor stomper Blazin’ and moving gracefully through the depths of her debut album, Lyric On My Lip. Expertly laced beats and basslines boomed onto the dance-floor as petite Tali spat rhymes with the sort of confidence and style reserved only for a select few in the drum ‘n’ bass community.

Right through from the energetic Lyric On My Lip to the more peaceful beats of Airport Lounge, Tali was in total control of the crowd in front of her. Full Cycle are renowned for producing some of the most influential talent on the circuit, and clearly taking Tali under their wing has worked wonders.

Tali’s set created the sort of atmosphere that is becoming increasingly rare at drum ‘n’ bass nights across the country. Bryan Gee took to the decks and played a nice, bouncy interlude after Tali’s show before the most influential men and women in drum ‘n’ bass took to the stage in front of a sell out crowd. It is hard to put into words how good Roni Size, D Product, Dynamite and co. were. The energy they had on stage was incomparable with any other drum ‘n’ bass act.

The Foundry was treated to a live journey through a history of ground breaking Reprazent material. Right through from It’s Jazzy and Brown Paper Bag to Playtime and Dynamite MC’s own Hotness. The MC talent on stage, which included Tali, Dynamite and Sweet Pea, kept the crowd hyped beyond anything Skibba or Shabba could ever dream of. Quite simply, this was the night of the year for so many reasons, and will go down with Roots Manuva, Blackalicious and Blackmarket as one of the greatest Tuesday Clubs of all time.

The main attraction of seeing Reprazent is the party atmosphere they create. The tracks these people have made over the past ten years include most of drum ‘n’ bass’s finest moments: Warhead, Snapshot, Trust Me. The list is endless. Rumours of Roni Size’s rider demands had cast a few doubts over his humility before the event, but the show that he and his crew put on fully justified the high ticket prices and any demands he may have had. Everyone he brought down was part of a very special, very dynamic team.

Dynamite MC was on hand at the merchandise stall mingling with the crowds and Roni even hung around after the show to sign the many tickets and album sleeves being thrust in his direction. There won’t be another party like this for a long time. If you missed it then you missed out.
