![]() Tsunchoo All Ribs and Prick (Cone Records) Regularly playing at Brighton’s Casablanca club, Tsunchoo, aka Simon Garret, offers us a taster of his debut album, ‘Scrambled.’ With promise of a live tour soon and being hailed as truly original and innovative in his approach to an already healthy genre, Simon has an awful lot to live up to. Hard and Cheap is a dirty, laid back electro number. The track has a nice, dark, twisted feel to it, and never attempts to become something it isn’t, whilst constantly morphing and progressing itself via an ugly, flowing bassline that sits nicely over the curious beats and sounds. The track has a lot of elements and at times becomes a little confused and cluttered, but overall the sound is sharp and moody, if a little cliché. All Ribs and Prick is more of the same, but with a more aggressive, much more appealing use of bass. The sound is very mechanical and at times can feel a little constricted. The use of a foreign student’s chat-up answer phone message is really good though, and adds a nice, awkward feel to the track, really bringing out the elements nicely. Also included is a remix of All Ribs and Prick by The Feltpeople, which sees a fairly irritating vocal sitting wearily over a well produced, but not especially effective, remix. The problem here is that a breaks dancefloor is very weary of the sounds it is being given, and this sort of fairly lifeless, mundane sound is nowhere near as good as the original. The type of sound that the original had on offer was quite distinct and purposeful, and this doesn’t translate well to a breaks remix. 7/10, but 4/10 for the All Ribs remix Home > Vinyl > ^top ![]() |
