Downrigging for the giant Chinook Salmon in the waters around Christian Island is one of our best-kept secrets...one even many cottagers are unaware of. Next to the West Coast the fishing here is one of the best in all of Canada. From late May to late September, climaxing in August, the fishing is great. These Pacific Salmon were introduced into the Great Lakes about 20 years ago. The ones in Georgian Bay are predominately stocked out of Owen Sound, where the Sydenham Sportsman Association releases over 200,000 Salmon fry each year. The chinook have a 4-year life cycle after which they return to the Sydenham River in Owen Sound in the fall, there they spawn and die. During the last year of their lives, in the Georgian Bay environmnet, these Salmon can weigh up to 30 lbs. They are clean and have no pollutants restrictions for eating. Rainhow and Lake Trout, or Splake, are also caught, but 8 out of 10 fish are Chinook. Nothing tastes better than frest fish for supper..especially fish caught that morning..espically if you caught it yourself! If you would like to experience catching one of these large salmon contact SUE'S FISHING CHATER. |
