WOMEN WHO WONDER WHODUNIT

An Idiosyncratic Review of Mystery and Detective Stories By and About Women

Every one has read Paretsky and Grafton and Cornwell. Even chain bookstores now offer a good selection of Marcia Muller's books. But there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of other women writing mysteries featuring female detectives of every sort, from LAPD homicide cops to Montreal gym teachers. Lots of good books get overlooked on crowded bookstore and library shelves. Interesting women authors, not for the first time, are dismissed as "genre writers," never to be heard from again.

This site is a small attempt to highlight some of the books, characters, and authors I've enjoyed. The lists, far from exhaustive, reflect only my interests and reading habits. While plenty of domestic and cozy mysteries are represented here, I do have a prejudice against talented amateurs who seem constantly to stumble upon murders only they can solve. Though they are probably no more accurate, I find that books which feature some sort of professional detective strain my credulity less. With few exceptions, both the locales and the characters discussed here are American.

I've tried to make these pages accurate. However, I'm sure to have missed some books and misattributed others. If you have suggestions, comments, additions, or corrections, please e-mail me. I'm always looking for something to read.
