Summer Workshop in World Music

The College Music Society will hold its 2003 Summer Workshop in World Music at San Diego State University in San Diego, California. The Workshop will open on Sunday evening, 8 June, close on Friday evening, 13 June, and will include performance opportunities and formal lectures in Javanese Gamelan, African Ensemble, Persian and Indian Classical Music.

The Workshop will provide an intensive "hands-on" experience, with supporting lectures and public concerts. The Workshop is designed for all instructors of undergraduate and graduate music classes. It will cover issues and principles relevant to the teaching and learning of music in the college classroom. The curriculum is designed to enable college music faculty to bring to their students a wider variety of traditional music from important cultures of the contemporary world.

The Workshop will present material that is relevant to multiculturalism in the college music curriculum. It will present material that is relevant for college teachers who work with undergraduate and graduate students, including both music majors and general university students. The Workshop will also serve as an introduction to the cultures of Africa, Indonesia, India, Iran, and Mexico.
