Paleontologist mixes it up with burgeoning student scientists...
Horner never finished college, but that
hasn't stopped him from becoming Curator of Paleontology at Montana
State University, as well as an adjunct professor of biology
and geology.
"I don't have a formal degree,"
he said. "It was the '60s."
Horner offered the students only one
qualification for his lecture: "All you need to know about
me is (that) my name is Jack Horner and I like dinosaurs."
"This
fish is a living dinosaur," said Frank Parauka, a fish biologist
with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service...
Brandon
Collins, also a student at East Millsboro Elementary School,
won the second place award ... noted that the horseshoe crab
"arrived at least 100 million years before the dinosaurs"
and "hasn't changed much since then."...

Biological anthropology, the division of Columbia's
anthropology department that has historically taught human evolution,
might soon become extinct...
The social scientists aren't comfortable
with the natural science part, so they have done their best to
sort of push it out of their department, to say 'you don't belong
here,'"

The
book is fueled by Pollan's quirky but brilliant Darwin-based
belief that plants have, through hit-and-miss accidents of evolution,
"figured out" ways to train humans to help them reproduce...
Grass, for instance, willingly evolved
to be green and thick so that it would be used in abundance on
acres and acres of lawns. In exchange, we would feed it, water
it, mow it and keep weeds and shrubs from killing it, Pollan
says...

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss
several hundred million years of earth history with the paleontologist
who will be responsible for studying and displaying the largest
dinosaur ever found in Big Bend, the Alamosaurus, which was excavated
in 2001...
The fee is $50 each, $45 for members
of the Big Bend Natural History Association.

While Dublin native Misti Williams really enjoyed

think genetic evolution is something she wants to base her career
on...
There is not a simple direct causal relationship
between one or several genes and a specific biological activity
or structure. Sydney Brenner recognized this problem when
he realized that the information required to specify the neural
connections of even a simple worm far exceeds the information
content of its DNA...
