The Transporter Dir. Corey Yuen |

As long as you dont look at it too closely, The Transporter is a pretty good action movie. Luc Besson writes it, and he has written The Fifth Element, The Messenger, La Femme Nikita and Leon: The Professional. Those movies are part of the problem. My expectations were pretty high, and The Transporter doesnt meet them. So, my first advice is to manage your expectations. Also, there are some inconsistencies in the story. My favorite is the scene, set in France, which takes place in a French police detectives office. The computer display is in English. Riiight. So be prepared to ignore some little things in here. Finally, some of the action sequences are unbelievable to the extreme. Hey, its a fight scene, youre not supposed to think about it, just enjoy the view. Some of the fighting views are pretty darn enjoyable. The Transporter is about a man (Jeremy Statham playing Frank Martin) who gets paid large amounts of money to move things from point A to point B. It doesnt matter what needs to be moved, hes the guy to do it. He plans meticulously for every contingency. He has three rules. 1. Once a deal has been made, the terms do not change. 2. No names. 3. Never look in the package. He considers these rules almost sacred. The second point that is made in this movie is how strongly he cleaves to these rules. (The first point is how cool his car is.) If someone has to die to ensure these rules dont get broken, so be it. Of course, he ends up breaking them for a girl. He doesnt want to, he fights it, but life is like that sometimes-- life in movies, anyway. To be fair, its not just any girl; its a pretty girl. Okay, seriously, its a pretty girl with a good cause. So he joins her cause and kicks serious butt, against people who are armed with a wide variety of weapons. Its fun, its violent, with a lot of car chases and very little dialogue. If thats the mood youre in, this is the movie for you. Jeremy Statham (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, The One) is as watch-able as ever, and gets a chance to show off some Hong Kong action moves. You will not have to turn on any higher brain functions; in fact, its better if you dont. Its not the best Besson work ever written. Its not even in the top ten percent. Dont go in thinking its written by the same guy who did Fifth Element, think of it as a martial arts, fast driving movie with white guys set in France. Once you do that, you should have a good time. I rate it: Matinee Jeremy Statham as Frank Martin, the transporter Qi Shu as Lai, the girl Matt Schulze as Wall Street, the bad guy Francois Berleand as Tarconi, the French Detective |
