THE FOUR STEPS TOO REALIZATION
To keep it brief, the first step is; we need to hear teachings of enlightenment from a teacher who has realized these teachings and is qualified. The second step is; to clear up our understanding of what we think we might have understood through a process of questioning, research, discussion, debate and contemplation. The third step is; once we have a clear and correct understanding, then to apply or put into practice what we have learned. And the fourth step is; after following the first three steps correctly then we will have the resultant realization of what we have applied and the benefits which come from that.
Buddhism is not based on blind faith but on the truth or reality of nature or phenomenon (Dharma). Therefore the Buddha taught not just to believe in what we hear or read or have become familiar with, but to substantiate what ever we hear and if we find it to be true, and of benefit to one and all, then it is good to believe in and live up to it.
What this means is to not blindly follow any guru or teaching, but to continnuasly and carefully question what we hear before taking it on. To do otherwise I feel would be foolish indeed, and to follow someone who tries to tell you that once you have found a guru and committed to follow them, then you should not question what they are teaching, could result in problems. So please use your discernment and not fall into this subtle trap, and if you have already then it is never too late to get out of it. Remember, a true Guru is not a manipulator, but a sincere and honest friend who is here only to guide you along the path of truth and light.
In the words of the great Lama Thubten Yeshe."Remember, we are all responsible for our own lives. Don't think that this Tibetan monk will give you enlightenment or make you powerful. It is not like that. Just think,"At this time in my life I have come into contact with this monk, and I will judge him realistically. I will not blindly accept what he says but will check up on whether it is right or wrong and rationally discuss it with him or her."
And in the words of Christ,"The foolish man built his house upon the sand and the rain came tumbling down. The rain came down and the floods came up and the house in the sand went c-r-a-s-h! The wise man built his house upon the rock and the rain came tumbling down. The rain came down and the floods came up, but the house on rock stood firm." In this case the sand means blind faith whereas the rock means truth.
The five qualities of a good teacher (Guru) are, controls self with, (1) morality, (2) mindfulness, and (3) wisdom. (4) Has perceived true nature of reality, and (5) has love for his/her students equally.
This process alone if applied in our every day lives will bring much benefit. It is my suggestion and wish that you approach everything you see in my site using this process of the four steps.
