DASJr's Currently-Small Tribute to...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

This page is my tribute to one of my favorite musicals..."The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Below you will find my personal (if not totally accurate) summary of the Rocky Horror phenomena, along with a hand-picked selection of the best links for info, pics, sounds, and all kinds of fun stuff.

HISTORY

Based on the 1974 London stage musical "The Rocky Horror Show", this 1975 movie became a cult favorite, especially when fans began A) shouting back at the characters on the screen, B) throwing things toward the screen when appropriate (i.e. rice during the wedding scene), and C) joining casts of people that would perform the movie--in costume--along with the screen. And that's what goes on in theaters all over the country to this day.

PLOT

As far as the plot of the movie, here it is in a nutshell: An engaged couple (Brad and Janet) wander into a creepy castle, where a mad--transvestite--scientist (Dr. Frank N. Furter) is creating a mate for himself (a musclebound man named Rocky). Along the way we meet Frank's groupie Columbia, Columbia's beau Eddie, Brad & Janet's science teacher Dr. Scott, and Frank's servants Riff Raff & Magenta. Hijinks ensue. Frank creates Rocky; Eddie fools around with Columbia; Frank kills Eddie; Frank seduces Janet; Riff Raff fools around with Magenta; Frank seduces Brad; Janet seduces Rocky; Magenta fools around with Columbia; Riff Raff & Magenta kill Columbia, Frank, and Rocky; and everybody sings! I'm probably making it sound like some lame sex farce, which it's not, but hopefully you get the idea.

CONTENT

The movie is rated "R". Needless to say, it's not--I repeat, not!--for kids. But despite the omnisexual shenanigans of the characters, it's rather tame in comparison by today's standards.
There's no outright nudity (save for fleeting nipple exposure when Columbia tries to dance in a tight outfit), and everything else is implied rather than shown. It's a musical comedy, not specifically a sex movie.
The only swearing in it consists of "dammit" a few times, with the phrase "mind f_ck" used once in a song. (However, if you're in a theater where audience participation is allowed, you will very likely hear all kinds of four-letter words and crude comments, many of which are pre-rehearsed and known by all the fans. It's all part of the tradition.)
"RHPS" is a musical tribute/satire of B-movie horror films from the 1940's and 1950's, resulting in a little violence, but few actual scares. At any rate, you should be in your mid-teens to see this flick for the first time, and you may have to be college age before you can truly appreciate it (though this is not always the case).

FANS

Are all "Rocky Horror" fans freaks? Nah. Many are fine, upstanding citizens who just happen to like watching the movie. Their are many aspects of this film that can attract (or turn away) many kinds of people. I've performed the show (and like the show) simply because it's a show (much in the same vein as movie musicals like "Grease" and "Little Shop of Horrors"), not because I have a liking for sexually or violently deviant behavior. The film is not trying to be a soapbox for any opinions towards the rights of this and that. It is, rather, a reflection on B-movies, '50's rock, and a touch of '70's glam. It's just a movie, just a show, and just good (if not totally clean) fun.
