by Charis ChariSeraph had heard of his rival ChariStatic(NEC)'s success in Hell and knew it was time to vanquish Diablo in the deepest Hell. To offset the gains made by the Netherspawn, he knew he would have to be as righteous as possible. The Quest of Righteousness was arduous, the least problem of which was no return to town. Down to 13 he strode, and there faced Doomies and Cave Vipers. These were no match for the power of good (and Chain Lightning). Lvl 14 was a little tougher, with Snow and Steel, but still a snap... A quarter or so of potions were used at this point. However, when he entered lvl 15 his heart sank. Burners of Souls :( Now for anyone, these are not pleasant, but damage was about 11 pts per swing (Golem is the most forbidden of spells for Seraphs) It was time to seek advice. But who could a wise seer turn to when HE needed consultation? Statler(OLD)! An adventurer of great power who had lived as long as the Seraph (almost as long as Methusalah). Statler was quickly summoned into game for advice. "Well, tell me what ya got to work with? I usually use Golem and Heal as I corner them Soulies." The lack of spells is explained. "Ya got any decent gear? (Not that you need anything more than tshirt of wolves and a resist staff)" Well... Crimson Armor of Radiance, Amber Helm of Radiance, Holy Defender Shield, Dreamflange, a Topaz Ring of Radiance, a Drake's Ring of Heavens, and Jade Ring of Heavens. "Sheesh! Freakin' lighthouse! We didn't have lighthouses back in my day... hmmm...." Then I mentioned the no town rule. "Sound like you may need to avoid combat. Tricolor level?" Not so lucky as to have only witches. Worse. Spawn and... Azures. "You're toast bud! Try again another day... unless..." Somberly, Chariseraph went about their plan. Short telehops, no blind jumps lest he land in middle of Azures and be slaughtered, and turn the ladies into pillars of salt if too hot. The lair of the traitorous Lazarus was across the level, and it was a very very nervous trip. Over the wall he hopped! Speech started, fireballs flew, bloodstars flew, and two ladies of doom sought his death. One step to the side to avoid instant death, then a series of fireballs and side steps. Holy blasts wracked Laz' body, and his madness ended. A portal flew open, and ChariSeraph caught his breath. "My goodness, you're still alive!?!" No restock of course, but a welcome moment to clear his head. Fully two dozen pots were drank on 15 just to stay alive. And the pentagram had not been found. With caution, speed, and another full belt, that hurdle was removed. "Should be a piece of cake now on 16, eh?" Er... I'm powerless against Advocates at present, and did I mention that I have to kill every knight in Diablo's lair before I can go for the victory? All with less than 20 pots left, +144% light radius, and "holy bolt" has to play a key role in the death. "You're insane! (b.net connection lost) Hmmm, I'll stick around to see if they need a body bag." Mercifully, the stairs were at least next to Diablo's lair. That was telekinesed open, and i tried to pick off the knights from afar. But emanating enough light to fry the dead (not just wake them), the whole lair woke up. Statler heard brief exclamations of panic from the Seraph before he composed himself. The Seer hopped smack in the middle of the lair, then out, blasting all blood knights with furious fireballs, and teleporting away from the vicious Lord of Terror. When the last knight fell, advocates were spread about flicking scalding balls of fire, and the Seraph tried for a semi-shielded corner. The rules of engagement were simple. No firewall could be cast ON TOP of Diablo, and a single Guardian Angel could be summoned. The rest of the damage had to come from holy bolts. Arriving first to the corner he summoned forth a few pillars of fire, and restocked his belt. It was a precise restock, zero extra potions beyond those eight. As the backpack was closed, Diablo arrived. The seer scorned at his Apocalypse blasts "Hah!!! When the REAL apocalypse comes it will be you getting blasted!!" He opened up a torrent of holy streams onto Diablo. While they could not stun, they did significant damage. The arrogant Diablo decided to remain in the flames, although it too did wrack his body. The potions were like a countdown, 8,7,6...3,2,1. At the end, the mana shield came down. It was the very briefest of moments, and the Seraph awaited the death blow. "Santus Domunus. Ora Pro Nobis." With the he cast his last holy bolt. Then, there was death.... But not, as expected, the death of ChariSeraph! That last bolt landed strong and true, and Diablo covered the seer in a crimson tide of blood!! Only later did he find that his helm was on the verge of destruction, and that the blow that brought down his mana shield took him to 83 of 84 hit points. Statler(OLD) congratulated him in channel, the Most Righteous Seraph. Charis This was the most exciting game I've had in a long time :) Thanks to Statler for his wisdom and encouragement and for sticking around for a potential nasty recovery on lvl 15. (Although... if recovery on 15 was needed, it would have taken the poor Geezer 23 years to do it!) (Note to Fyre(SER)-- now I think you went through even greater torture in your QoR, using holy bolt and teleport. If you could post or email more details on your Golden run, I would appreciate it. I had NO idea it was going to be as difficult as my game went. I think the rules will be revised to have the QoR rules more like described above, with four levels of distinction. Highest honor to those who defeat him with ONLY Holy Bolt. Then those who survive the ordeal (with Firewalls allowed, not on top of 'D', and only with him 'on screen'), and finally those who sacrifice themselves to take out Diablo (like CharisAngel's Golden run). The fourth distinction would be if it was for your 3rd dot. Comments?) |
