Kaatya was the daughter of the deceased Tarith, daughter of Baritha. Tarith was killed by a rancor because she "smelled" like Baritha too much, even through Tarith did not have Allya's Magic. Kaatya was the middle child of three, having an older brother and younger sister. She was the only one to show any talent with Allya's Magic, but her talents are limited to simple spells such as Mind-Touch, Spell of Discovery, Spell of Languages, and Spell of Detection.
Kaatya served in a low position of spellcasters in the Singing Mountain clan, being considered slightly above the slaves and women who could never be a witch. Feeling shunned and belittled, she left the village to seek someplace she'll be more appreciated. After spending several nights in the desert and even more nights in trees or caves, she found a village in the Great Canyon and watched them off and on between foragings to see if perhaps she might fit in with this clan. She was found out the next day by a woman who was tall with dark hair and eyes. Kaatya was led back to the Great Canyon to be tried for spying.
She was soon standing silently inside a circle of women, some of which bore purple welts upon their faces or necks. The realization that she was surrounded by Nightsisters was enough to rattle her, but nothing could have prepared her for the all encompassing fear that pierced her very being when her blue-gray eyes met the ice-blue eyes of the Nightsister's leader, Renata Sabra.
Her chest and throat tightening slowly till her air was cut off, Kaatya's knees threatened to buckle, but she stood her ground, returning Sabra's intense gaze. Black spots were blurring her vision so Kaatya was forced to close her eyes and blow her head. Unsure to this day if Sabra felt pity for her or sensed that she wasn't spying on the clan, Kaatya was soon released from the Force Clutch and gasped for air, her lungs aching.
After extensive questioning and a vote, Kaatya was accepted as a Nightsister and put under the tutelage of Dhimitrix, who was charged to teach Kaatya the Nightsister's ways and control of spells. Kaatya had an innocent look to her that can be very deceiving, yet her anger and greed didn't go quite as deep as most in the clan, so her spell control didn't increase by much. Sabra approached the problem another way, by encouraging Kaatya to supplement her power with physical prowess. After trying out several types of weapons, Kaatya could be seen practicing with a staff with increasing skill. She began studying with a sword not too long ago, but her skill with the staff nearly unbeatable now.
Sabra had expressed how pleased she was with Kaatya's progress by taking her to a nearby clearing to show her the intricacies of the chak'ram. However, Sabra ended the lesson abruptly with blood dribbling down her arm, but smiling good-naturedly at the younger, smaller woman as they turned to leave the clearing. Sabra assured Kaatya that the chak'ram was a very difficult weapon to weild and that she shouldn't be discouraged in her other studies.

Having the attention of the two most influential and strong women in the clan, Kaatya finally feels as though she has found a place to belong.
