Shim'a and Dioath train every night, learning how to fly without the goggles they need in the daylight. But here we see Dioath in his spiffy Day Goggles!

It is a far more dangerous prospect but they know that by now, they might even fight Thread at night!

"Dioath, you've made me so proud!" Shim'a said. "After all the teasing you and I have been through, it's good to know that now we can save people from Thread and get credit for it too!"

I am pleased, as well, Shim'a, because I can help you. You have made something new, haven't you?

"I have. It's called a pressure-sensor. Look, when we go up high, you might not be able to tell but I sure can. The air is thin and cold up there."

That is why you have a riding coat, the dragon said, wisely.

"Yes, but it also gets very hard to breathe. I want to see how high we can go before that happens. Or even to see how high you can go alone, and you can check the pressure-sensor yourself. Look, it's large enough."

Sure enough, there were small beads which floated up and down. Shim'a had been testing this theory of his, all through out their weyrling training days. Now that Malisah was on the sands and they would be awaiting her Impression, he had time to learn how to use his new device fully.

"When the sky gets cloudy and the rain comes," he explained, "it's because there isn't enough pressure to keep the water up in the clouds. When its all clear and sunny, it's because the pressure from the ground keeps the clouds away. You can see them hanging out near the mountains, and they stay there. Then the pressure changes, and wham! You have a storm! Isn't that great?"

I like storms, they are full of wind and water! Your invention will help men more than dragons, my friend.

"I know that," Shim'a said, almost dejectedly. "If I can get people to use it."
