"Take that metal bar, will you Volth?" V'ax asked of his small brown weyrling. The dragon nosed into the pile of rubble and selected the right bar with the mental help of his rider. This one? You can use this, here... "Thank you," V'ax replied, as the dragon set the long heavy bar onto the work bench. Two other smithcrafters came to help and were still in awe of working with not only such an unusually gifted boy, but with his dragon no less! They like me, Volth bespoke, with a dragon grin. |

"He's so ... little!" One of the other riders commentd about Volth. V'ax smirked and leaned on the side of the dragon. "What did you expect out of a white queen and Sixth over there?" V'ax nudged his head at the direction of the weyr's tiniest dragon of all, blue Sixth ridden not by a "rider" so much as, well, Kalkin. |

I am not so tiny that I cannot help fight Thread, Volth commented broadly, and with a bit of anger. He'd rarely been so insulted. "Easy, it's all right Volth," said one of the wing riders. "That's why we're here. You and V'ax will do great work with us, in the Screw Loose Wing." From over on the other work bench Kalkin let off a surprised snorting laugh. He obviously hadn't heard the name of the newer wing...But he kept his head to his work, though everyone could see the extremely rare smile continuing to spread over his otherwise somber face. V'ax raised his eyebrows. "You want us in a wing?" "Not just any wing," Daverin said, pushing the others aside. "The Screw Loose wing is for us tinker-heads. And if there's anything you are, V'ax, you're a tinker heart and soul." The green rider gently indicated that same tinker's artificial legs, and he nodded. Then, V'ax smiled and leaned in to Daverin. "Weren't you jealous of him going and being with that Omora woman?" he whispered, hazarding a playful glance back at the rider of his dragon's sire. "Pfffah!" Kalkin said, head dropping onto the table in silent laughter. "Apparently not," Daverin said, shrugging. "He knows where he's best needed..." That sounded like a lie, but V'ax didn't comment. Instead, he turned to his small dragon. Volth had grown, but only so much as his sire Sixth in comparison to other dragons: in other words, he was the size of a blue, rather than a brown. And a weyrling blue at that. But if anyone could appreciate the small size of this dragon, it was V'ax. He would more easily be able to fly at all on him, than a much bigger dragon. Even a blue grown to full size would have been much too large for the small-bodied and legless man. I love how you always compliment me, in the back of your mind, V'ax... Bespoke the dragon warmly. "I know," V'ax said, patting the long nose. "We'll join. You don't fight Thread much, do you?" "Very rarely," Daverin said. "But when we do, it's usually down near the ground, often with a queen's wing to assist them. I'm afraid that some of us aren't as experienced as others when it comes to flying during thread fall." V'ax nodded, "that suits me fine. I've already had my legs go missing... I don't need to lose anything else important." They only ignored Kalkin's slow laughter at the other table... |
