The only Spinners folk music site I've ever known on the web...

This is not the main version of the site and is not regularly updated. Click here to go to the main Spinners site, frames, Java and all - as Yahoo host this for free it sometimes doesn't work, so this is the safe version! If you use any of the links to other Spinners pages, just click the 'Back' button on your browser to get back to this page.

STOP PRESS ... What's new ... STOP PRESS ...

18/02/04 - Hughie's festival itinerary for the coming year and some details of his trip to the US are now on 'Hughie's Page'

8/12/03 - I've added several songs to the 'chords' section - they are from the 60's/70's book, so will be useful to a lot of folk I hope. I won't include the songs from Hughie Jones as you can buy his book for those!

1/6/03 - Hi You'all,
Here I am in the great metropolis of CHICAGO.I am visiting Little Mattie Groves (No.2 son) and his lovely wife Sarah for the third birthday of my grandson Henry Matsu Nishiura Groves. Still getting to the Globe at Topsham most Sundays but not when I am in Chicago or Australia.
CHEERS, Mick

4/05/03 - Cliff Hall has been in touch - here's what he says... Finally found my way around my computer and found your page. Lovely to know that our fans still remember us, we always appreciated the support we got from them. I now live in Adelaide with my wife Dorothy and although I do miss family and friends from time to time I am very happy and settled here. It was lovely to have Mick and his wife Doreen out to see us in January. Mick and I did a few numbers at my local folk club which we both enjoyed. It was the first time I had sung in public since we retired! Keep up the good work, God Bless, Love to all our fans, Cliff

_______________________________________________________

A very warm welcome to one and all to the 'official' Spinners web site; the Liverpool group that brought folk music to the British public for four decades now has a home on the web.

_______________________________________________________

Back in the 1960's they were playing their blend of British and world folk set to a modern guitar sound in Liverpool and around the world. In the 1970's I recall sitting ensconsed as a child in front of the television as they played sets on their own show. Then, in the 1980's I got to see them play live several times, as well as hear their excellent radio shows which I have sadly now got no more than a couple of copies.

In general, this is the state of things: Mick was Chair of Education on Wirral Borough Council and was featured on 'After They Were Famous' on UK TV; he has now moved to the west country. Tony is still very much in action singing, both Sea music and Jazz. Hughie is gigging and has released three solo records in the Spinners' mould; there is a review of one in the links page, and a link to his merchandise site. There is now a page which I will maintain on Hughie's behalf, giving details of all his CD's and information if you would like to book him for gigs. As for Cliff, he has retired and is spending time in the UK, Majorca and, this winter, Australia.

Cliff, Mick, Tony and Hughie are all delighted that everyone is still interested in the music and they have promised the site any new information as it becomes available. It is worth checking back regularly; I put up information as and when it reaches me! Alternatively, click on the 'Mind-It' form at the end of the page and you can receive a mail whenever I change anything on the page.

Lots of people have asked for a club to post messages about The Spinners, so I have set one up. It's free and easy to join Yahoo! Clubs and this is an opportunity to share memories, provide news and updates that don't come to the website first, and ask questions of other members. Look out for online discussions, see the 'calendar' for details. Please join! (Click the 'back' button to return here) or make use of the frameset and click the link on the left to keep everything on the same page

Older news...

4/02/03 - NOTE DATE CHANGES - Hughie has written me a letter detailing what he and some of the others have been up to - Mick has been out to Oz to see Cliff, but the majority of the details are on 'Hughie's Page'.

27/11/02 - Nice to have Mick back online - "Hi, sorry I have been off air for some time but there has been big changes in my private life. I am now living in Devon and have given up politics as an elected member. So I have dusted off the old guitar and can be found most Sundays at Topsham folk club at the Globe Hotel in Topsham near Exeter. Except for January'03 as I will be visiting Cliff at his new life in Australia. CHEERS, Mick"

03/12/01 - Tony Davis says: "Johnny Handle of The High Level Ranters, Newcastle, and I have put together "A Tale Of Two Cities", Liverpool & Newcastle, which we will be presenting around shortly. Watch out for it!"

08/08/01 - Some forthcoming solo appearances from Hughie Jones listed in the Yahoo Club - he also says that there is no further movement in the CD deal with Trojan.

27/07/01 - Apologies for the lack of news at the moment but I will put things up when I get them. The best bet to keep up to date is to join the free Yahoo! Club - details below. All the gigs go up there first and there's plenty of other discussions

15/01/01 - Some album covers added in the discography; send scans of any others you have please, via e-mail from my main home page! (See buttons on left)

13/01/01 - Check out the improved discography; have you got anything not listed? Let me know!

08/01/01 - Hughie has now got a page of his own, you can connect to it from the menu on the left!

03/01/01 - Mick Groves says "Hi Dave and All, HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all. A little bit of news for you all is that following "After They Were Famous" Trojan Records approached us with a view to issuing a double CD in the Spring. It will be based around the tracks on "Around the World and Back Again" with some other previously other recorded tracks. CHEERS, Mick

A new link to a company selling Spinners LP's, at a decent price, on the links page.

Mick Groves says - I know Hughie hasn't been well recently and Cliff is off to Adelaide, Australia soon for the winter. Tony has just been in touch and a link to his own site is to be found via the 'links' button on the left.

Hughie was taken ill after a performance in the US, but is now recovering back home and hopefully will be back in singing action in 2001.
